I saw photos of the real thing; its in a museum in Germany

Hi guys. I found what appears to be another photo of this vehicle. The paint doesn't seem to be as pristine so may be an older photo before a repaint.. LINK also listed was a translation of the plaques in front of it. The plaque on the left says "Beobachtungspanzer", "Observation tank". the rest unreadable. The one on the right " says "Feuerleitpanzer", "Fire control tank". and goes on to say Former US tank "Sherman" After the removal of the Cannon it became Observation tank ... unreadable ... The Vehicle served on the Troops training ground Meppen as a movable Observation and Fire Control platform for live ammunition shooting the photo and translation were found in a group post in 2002 on the net. marvelous, another Sherman type! Turret is ex-Firefly ?? The Russian railways used Army-surplus VVS & E-8 Shermans (with & without turrets) as recovery vehicles at train-wrecks for a few years - don't know what color scheme they had but would be interesting.

I've seen that these surplus tanks were used for everything from construction to forest fire fighting after the war ended. I wonder if this is one of those kind of tanks

Since the Training Area Meppen, Germany, has been used since before the WWII by the German ammo industries and defence institutes to test and evaluate their products, quite some unique items were in use there. The use of an armoured artillery obeservation vehicle would just be logic. And since the safety of tested ammo might be a minor point of discussion during the labor condition discussions with the local staff, this staff vehicle might have been an answer to get them to their jobs. Nice work. The vehicle at Sinsheim has quite a few differences though. I contacted the museum and they were kind enough to send a few extra images that aren't on the net. The turret is ex-Firefly but has no pistol port (D50878 type) with an ARV (All Round Vision) cupola. The hull - an ex M4A3E8 105mm - has the late type engine access door torsion bars fitted while the rear stowage tray and armoured exhaust cover have been removed. There are what appear to be locally produced/fitted indicators up front along with non standard Sherman headlights. The museum piece has T84 tracks fitted with T80 spare links. Certainly makes for an interesting version. I'm putting one together at the moment for a future magazine article. Gary
