1/72 DUKW

construction
Stages 1 & 2 are common to both the simplified and more detailed version and deals with the hull and drivers cab. Working to both the Italeri and ExtraTech instructions, the first thing I did was carefully remove the moulded on anchor from the rear of the Dukw’s deck.

ExtraTech provide a beautiful photo-etched one consisting of 6 pieces. At this time I also installed the wire mesh behind the drivers’ station along with the side engine meshes. There is also a new photo-etched dashboard along with foot pedals (in 1/72?), and more detailed seat backs.

Thanks vinnie a great build and in 1/72 very very nice and love the added detail- shame that some of the beautiful etch pieces hardly show Ian

Thanks Ian, I know what you mean, it's always a shame I feel, to paint models that have lots of brass on them, My girlfriend feels the same... "It looks kinda nice and shiny....!" Vinnie

Great job Vinnie. I picked up the ExtraTech PE set, but no other aftermarket for the DUKW. I am planning on trying to repair the model kit tires by using the war gaming version wheels. Once I figure out how to do it, I can write up a "how to" fix the M8 and DUKW tires.

Thanks Robin, and since I'm going to build another of these to use the tarp a run down of what's wrong with the wheels would certainly be useful! Vinnie

Excellent article Vinnie. I am impressed by the PE set, it really gives a fantastic level of detail. I was most impressed by your finish job. Excellent weathering at that scale. Steve

Teacher, that was a really great review! The pictures were excellent and showed off the detail so well I kept forgetting that the model is 1/72 instead of 1/35. I am just getting started in "braille scale" armor and look foreward to more great reviews. Jerry in New Jersey

Hey Vinnie! One word: Amazing! What a detail for a braille scale model! Great review also and it's very inspiring. I really enjoyed reading and love the pictures! My only, only, only, nitpick.... with all that perfect scaled detail added, I found the steeringwheel rather 'big'. But that is the only thing. Paul

Aw Paul! I had to find a bigger steering wheel, the little 1/72 guy I keep to advise me on these things said the kit one was too small! :-) Thanks for the comments! Vinnie
