Almost all tanks that were deployed in WW1 had only bulletproof armour, no matter their weight, because dedicated AT guns had not yet been developed and armour plate thick enough to stop heavy artillary would be too heavy for anything light than 70 tons. It wasn't until the SCW showed towed AT guns carried by infantry could easily KO most tank that armour thicker than an inch became common.

The Germans also discovered that if you removed a bullet head from a rifle round and inserted it back to front it burnt a perfect hole through the armour.
