Were the three lift hooks (round circles) atop the T-34/76 turret fixed in an upright position, or were the round parts passed through a hole in a bolt, thus allowing them to "fall" to the sides?

upright. You must be referring to the earlier 2 man turrets - the 1942 new turret had 4 arranged in an "X" patern on the turret roof. In real 1:1 scale they are quite sturdy.
