Hey , don't knock yourself on the figure painting , for such a close up that looks really good.
Practise makes perfect and you do not seem far off .
I really think figures add a great deal to a model , one being the sense of scale.
Well done

Andy,

Wow! You got skills! Looks great. Now I won't be able to build the one in my stash. It'll be a disappointment after seeing yours!

Andy

Looking great, and your timing is very useful. I started mine a couple of months ago, and got as far as completing the chassis, engine, winch, etc. Then, as i had several Aber etched brass sets for the beast, I held off until I managed to get holod of a copy of the approrpiate Panzer Tracts reference so that I could see where all the fiddly bits go. Unfortunately, a Panther, a Panzer IV and a King Tiger distracted my attention.

If you think Eduard is bad for fiddly bits, then you ain't seen nuthin , , , Like you, I will probably leave off the bits which aren't going to be seen anyway (eg the brackets which hold the brake lines on to the chassis (!))

I've also managed to turn up a set of the Verlinden cargo, which will be interesting to paint.

Your photos are particularly useful as a guide for my future efforts - keep posting !

Merry Christmas (1:00pm Christmas Day here)

First of all I'd like to say Merry Christmas to you all too. Thank you for your kind words.

John,
Glad you liked my humble attempts at figure painting, I will go back and add the buttons, insignias etc soon. They do look better from further away!

Thomas,
Just go for it, I didn't think mine would turn out like it has when I started it.

Rob,
I'm pleased that the photos are proving useful. I looked at a couple of cargos that are available and decided it would be more fun to compile my own, it's coming along.

Danny,
Glad you like it so far.

These will form part of my cargo:

Here is the radiator / front end bit.

My modelling area (a worktop in the kitchen) has now been returned to its' proper use for Christmas food preparation etc, it's also where we eat. I'll have to leave off for the next week or so.

See you all soon.

Andy

Andy, great details on your FAMO. The chipping is very realistic.

Enjoy the Christmas food. Looking forward to see more when you recapture the kitchen after the holidays

Hello Andy,
Your work is truly awesome and inspiring! I have been eagerly watching to see you post more and I must say Well Done! I look forward to seeing your finished product. Your weathering is superb and I must say those are the best looking wood boxes I have come across. Very realistic. Enjoy the holidays and a Happy New Year!

Best Wishes for 2008,

Walter

Frank,

The gas bottles are from the Italeri Field Workshop set. It has lots of useful bits and pieces in it, including some tools.

Well worth getting, found mine on Ebay.

Counting the days until I can use the kitchen worktop and start modelling again

Hi folks,

Back again with a couple of photos of what I've been doing lately.

First the cab interior:

Then the front end:

The windscreen is now in place:

And so is the steering wheel:

Please let me know what you think so far.

Looking very good so far.

Funny, your modeling work room is very similar to mine. I use our dinning room (which is right next to our kitchen). I, too had to "pack-up" for Christmas. For some reason my wife didn't think her mother would enjoy eating around an unfinished Sd.Kfz 222 and 250 alte - go figure.

I've done some more work on my Famo, so here are the latest pictures. I've been building a couple of Airfix braille scale kits too while I seek more inspiration. I've got a couple of gaps that need to be dealt with.

Thanks for looking and let me know what you think.

Hi,
Can you tell me how you achieved the metal look on the engine? It looks like it would also look very good on metal tracks.
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

The engine and transmission were sprayed with Tamiya X10 Gun Metal. When it had dried I gave it a few washes of black oil paint and left it to dry completely. I mixed Mig's Europe Dust pigment with enamel thinners and "painted" the whole engine and transmission, again leaving it to dry completely. With an old fairly large stiff paint brush, I then just scratched / scraped the pigment off where I didn't want it to be seen, it also removed some of the wash too which then allowed Gun Metal to shine through as well.

Hope that helps.

Hello everyone,

Time for another update methinks. It's all coming together and I think the end is now in sight. I'm still working on some ideas for the diorama.

Right on to the pictures:

First some items for the cargo, a box of vegetables.

Now some potatoes, which do look a bit like rocks or stones in the photo but are better "in real life".

An oil drum.

Something to drink.

Some odds and ends to be placed on or near to the Famo.

A tool box.

Assorted tools.

And somewhere to sit.

Some rifles and boxes.

I've added a chain to the front end.

The front of the bonnet did not meet the back of the bit where the radiator lives and left me with quite a gap. It must be my fault as I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the kit. I spent ages puzzling over how to hide it. I couldn't use filler or plasticard as all the bits were already painted and weathered. In the end this is what I used.

Anyway that's enough for now.

Let me know what you think.

Andy

Looking really good!! I'm in the process of building Revell's 1/72 scale FAMO, so this is really interesting stuff!!

A small note, I read somewhere that the handles on the wire-cutter was actually not wood, but bakelite, so they should be black..

Steen

Ronnie,

The way I did the wooden boxes was to first paint them with Tamiya XF15 Flat Flesh and allow to dry. Depending on the finish you want, paint them with either Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna oil paint and leave it for 20 minutes. The oil paint was then washed off using a brush dipped in clean enamel thinners. You can remove as much or as little oil paint as you like, which will then give a varied finish.
If it doesn't turn out right then wipe the oil paint off with a rag or tissue and start again.

Hope that helps.

Steen,

I didn't know the handles were bakelite, thanks for pointing that out. I'm going to leave them though as I think they look better in wood.
