Did Canadians ever use the Sherman M4A3? If they did can I use Tamiya's 35250 kit? If they didn't what mark did they use (excluding the Firefly) and who makes a good (avaliable) kit of it?
Thanks for the help again guys.

Canadians recieved M4A3E8's after the war and they were used in Korea but not in WWII....We received mostly M4A4's ...During the war the Americans descided to keep most M4A3's for themselves..hope this helps..

Canadians used the M4A4 as the main workhorse....but you can find M4s and hybrid.....M4A1s....some M4A2's....and some Sherman variants......M7 Priest....M10.....Archilles.
As far as kits go......M4A4 by Dragon is hard to find....but a Firefly V gives you a good hull for one......the Tamiya M4 is good and you can also use the turret from this on the M4A4 hull.....M4A1the Dragon one is the best but very rare....the Italeri on.....use the hull with the Tamiya turret on it and it will be good...M4A2 Verlinden makes a good upper hull and combined with the Tamiya turret makes a nice one......M7 Italeri.......M10 and Archilles either AFV Club or Academy.
Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the help dioman. What is the main difference between the M4A4 and the M4A3? Are these differences rectifiable if I use the Tamiya kit? Or will I just be causing myself a bigger headache?
Thanks
Thanks

I agree with Dioman's accurate breakdown af Canadian Shermans. The only one I'm not too sure on is using the Italeri M4A1, I haven't ran across the late M4A1 being used by Canadian forces but with the Sherman, you never know. And I believe the Canadians used M4A2E8's in Korea and here at home during the post W.W.II years.
There is quite a big difference between the M4A3 and the M4A4. You would be looking at some major headaches in trying to make that conversion. Far too many changes to list in fact. You are much better off being patient and waiting for DML to re-release an M4A4 or try to find the Vc Firefly and get an aftermarket turret. Use your Tamiya to build a U.S. Sherman, they're the ones who used it the most. :-)

Deep breath...OK...
The A4 And A3 are so totally different that there is no sane way to use a Tamiya kit to make an A4. You must use the Dragon kit and fix it. Older threads will go into greater detail on this but to make things short the lower hull is too long and there are other detail fixes to be made. I've done five of these variants now, so I'm pretty comfortable with the surgery.
In WW2 the Canadians used NO M4A3 variants. Just about everything else, though, particularly M4A2 in Sicily and Italy, and M4 and M4A4 versions everywhere. This includes howitzer M4's and some 76mm M4A1's in Italy.
Postwar, the Canadians standardized on rebuilt M4A2 tanks with HVSS (the E8s); all with the T23 turret and 76mm gun. These were used up until the early 1970's in reserve formations. In Korea, they took tanks from US stocks in-theater and so used late-model M4A3 76mm tanks that aside from engines were nearly identical to the tanks they left at home. Information on markings can be found in Marteinson & McNorgan's "Royal Canadian Armoured Corps: An Illustrated History" and a neat color plate in Zaloga's new Osprey book on the 76mm Sherman variants.
