Hi,
I decided to build another (2nd for me) King Tiger. I called it "The last Befehlspanzer VI ausf B" as it's going to be a command version - which was relatively rare for this tank, with as many modifications as I know about or I'm able to make (I will try to describe some of them the best I can as the work will go on). Any feedback, comments, corrections, ideas or tips will be welcomed and very appreciated.
The inventory for this project:
the base will be IMHO the best kit to create a late KT, DML's 6232
It will be accompanied by some AM accessories and sets:
an excellent PE set from Lion Roar for both versions: Henschel (known as production turret) and so called Porsche turret (in reality turret made by Krupp). This kit is really great. It has so many parts, for both turrets version, early and late versions that one will have enough parts for two kits.
and a small in-box:
other accessories:
Tasca's German antenna set
Aber's towing cables (I don't like those given by Dragon)
Plus Model PE buckets set (I find tank with buckets hanging on the rear really cool )
Some italeri jerrycans, evergreen styrene rods as well few other things will be useful during the built.
About markings. I am lining towards a very simple ones. in the late stage of war often the only sign on the whole tank (talking about Tiger ausf B) was the German cross (balkenkreuz).
Hope you'll enjoy this build.

Like you say Jimmy. Well, I'm doing my best
A little update
The rear plate is finished . The jack and the wooden block have been deleted as they were not mounted since oct 1944.
I used some PE parts from the Lion Roar set. I was lucky as I had some plastic rods from evergreen... without them some parts are impossible to make... The rear light has been changed for the one from LR. I drilled a hole and added a small wire like here:
the idea of the missing cover of the right exhaust came from this pic of a late Tiger ausf B
the brackets for jerrycans are just the unit's field workshop workers modification like it may be seen on the picture of the tank of the commander of 509 battalion. I found it looking cool and have never seen it before done by anyone else
Started work on upper hull. The real fun begins now.
More updates to come.

Pawel,
Should there be some bolt holes or threaded studs where the missing exhaust cover was fixed to the tank?

thank you yankeearty
I knew it was a good idea to post it here... thanks Tom! I haven't thought about this. It's even worse that I ave for example this pic
I'll try to make them not too big as there would be some paint, dirt etc. Leaving two or three studs/screws wouldn't hurt neither.
thanks a lot

Glad to help, Pawel,
Looking at your pic of the stacked hulls you'll not have to fabricate the big holes. If you look closely in the red box you can see the six locating holes you need to drill. The big holes are where the actual exhaust pipes emerged so unless your modelling a tank with no exhaust at all you can forget these.
Just look at the left side exhaust with guard and use that as a guide.
Or drill holes through the guard your not using (just cut the bolt heads off first) hold it over the exhaust as if your dry fitting it and use that as a template to mark where you need the new holes in the hull.
All the best
Tom

Hi,
I'm still alive and working on it. Just don't have enough time to do as much as I would like to. Also the PE clamps are just not easy for me.. in fact THEY ARE KILLING ME!!! Can't take any more clamps on this one
But here it goes. The upper hull is finished in around 80 %. Some PE parts are not finished as I'm afraid damaging them while manipulating the model. They will be finished later. Later on I will also add front and rear fenders, and some armoured side skirts may also appear.
for the command version the mount of the antenna from Tasca was added and a plastic rod to imitate the storage bin for the s"star" antenna was fixed
one of the great pictures of a command Tiger II
the armoured protection was rather a field modification but Jentz in his book describes it as test made in January '45. The goal was to protect the radiators from for example air attacks with small calibre MG .
I will work on the turret now.
Any comments welcomed

Excellent work spit!
Have a half finished Tiger Ausf. B (Final) sitting on a shelf at the minute, and cann relate to a few of the mods you are undertaking here.
I imagine the DML kit comes with a turned barrel, but I bought an armourscale one for my build and must say it is a work of art and highly recommended.
Out of interest, will you be doing a final turret with the 6 track hangers per side, rain guard over the sight, modified rear hatch etc.?
If so i'll be very interested to see it, as i'm undertaking these on my build (or was/will be when I get back around to it!)
Good luck with this, it's looking great so far!

Thank you a lot James,
and the loops for camouflage, yeap, it will be all there sir. I agree with you that an AM barrel could look really great but I decided to keep the budget reasonable so I will just use the one from the kit. What I really regret is that I don't have the transport tracks. I really wanted them. I'm just not ready to buy the friuls and haven't managed to find any plastic from an older kit. Will have to do with the standard "late" from the kit
thank you for your interest

Thats great to hear, will definately be keeping tabs on this one to see how you get on!
As for the tracks, hobby boss do the late style tracks for cheap but I presume that is the same as included in the kit. Don't know of any alternatives i'm afraid.

There are plenty tracks in the kit.
But about those late features, I shouldn't worry too much about that to add. Point of fact, the final batches of Tiger-Bs were all mixtures of all kinds of fittings.
Pictures of the Henschel factory show that a couple of turrets at the end (March '45 that is) had the earlier loader's hatch installed for instance.
And tracks, you'd have a better chance finding pics of the earliest transport tracks installed on a final Tiger-B than the intended new single link track. Reason being, the Skoda factories which manufactured the tracks had been captured earlier than the Henschel plant.
Further, you could really just do anything it seems, plenty of photographic evidence to support "creative liberty" on final Tiger-Bs.
For further interest, the last batch of 8 included one Befehls Tiger-B....

I agree with you Herber that last Tigers B were some kind of a mix what could have been found in the warehouses. One of the good examples is the vehicle with octopus camo pattern. 4 pairs of hangers per side, AA ring, late front mudguards, rain guard. Pictures taken by Americans dated march 45 from the Henschel factory show (ready?) turrets with 4 pairs of hangers per side, most of them (4 of 5) also have AA rings as well as (one turret was a command version with additional antenna). There is also rare picture of a late Tiger II with 6 pairs of hanger (for the new late style tracks) equipped with the earlier tracks (at least the only spare link is not the "late one").
The "Octpus" Tiger (btw the white swastika was very probably added artificially on the picture a s htere are another pictures of this particular tank without it)
turrets from henschel (the first plan turret is a command version )
knocked out late KT with earlier tracks

the turret will be finished today or tomorrow. But I need a little help with the AA MG late post. In the Jentz's & Doyle's book I found this description:
Maybe it's a problem of my poor English but the fact is ... I don't have any idea how it should look like
and another small question do I leave this little thing in the red circle? I don't know it's utility. Was it present because of the AA ring on the cupola?

Hi Spit,
The late AA MG mount was litterally a short stubby tube welded on top of the periscope housing direvtly in front of the swivel hinge for the commanders hatch. My beleif is that a post on the MG slotted either inside or over this tube to quickly attach the MG when needed.
I have a diagram of all turret modifications made to late Tiger Ausf. B's and this AA mount is included. If you drop me a PM with your address i'll be happy to e-mail it to you.
As for the item in the red circle i'm afraid I can't make it out and being at work can't check it against any of my own kits. I'm sure someone should be able to help you out.
On another note.........

I have seen both of the pictures of the front of the 'octopus Tiger' both with and without the swastika, and it is my opinion that the one with the marking is the original. The picture without it has a definite lack of detail in the paint work around that area, and some of the 'octopus print' is missing.
As I understand it the white swastika was added by US troops after capture and removed by some one more recently to prevent offence being caused to people who are sensetive about the symbol and what it stood for.
Good luck with the build,
James

Hi Spit.
The small piece at the front of the cupola should stay. I believe it's a stopper guide for a swivel hatch. I've seen the same things in my work, the hatch swivels over, can't go any further than the plate, is tightened down, slideing down the plates sloped edge for a perfect fit.
I've also seen it referred to as 'the 12 O'clock marker' but I don't think it is..

Pawel,
The kitty is looking very good!
I don't think I've seen the pic of the 'octopus' KT without the swastica but the swastica looks chalked on. Could it have been washed off by rain storms?
