Hi all,
Does anyone know if the IS-2's built at the ChTZ plant used the early style tracks with one guide tooth on every link?
I'm considering building Tamiya's JS-2 Model 1944 ChTZ (aka IS-2m) and the kit's indy and one piece tracks are the late type with one tooth every 2nd link.
I have a set of Model Kasten's workable tracks (Type A, kit #SK9) with guide teeth on every link and was wondering if they were used on ChTZ vehicles.
Any info would be appreciated.
Cheers

I suppose it would be possible to use those Modelkasten tracks, but you may have to backdate other parts of your IS2 to one of the earliest editions of 1943 to match up. Pretty sure by '44 the Soviet arsenals were in high gear and not that much improvising from old stocks was needed. You might want to save those MK tracks for an IS-1 project down the road?
Cheers!

Hey Rick,
That's not a bad idea.
I have a DML IS-1, IS-2, ISU-122S and ISU-152 sitting in my stash and they supposedly have a Premium IS-2 in the works.
Cheers

Split-link tracks appeared on the IS-1, so I don't believe that they are a late feature.

In the Concord Stalins Heavy Tanks book there is a good picture of the IS2m with the "earlier" track fitted so it is possible, Page 52, center picture. These tracks show up all the way to Berlin, however the bulk of the pictures that are clear show them on the assult guns. I recall a discussion here not too long ago that ended with the conclusion that both tracks were used up to 1945 and seen on all variants of the Stalin series.

Nice photo on this page showing the flate plate nose and split-link tracks featured in the Tamiya kit

Hit the gallery link on the side of the same page for more IS-2 photos showing both types of track in use.
