I need your help on this one!

I'm building a diorama for a ZIS 5 truck (Alan) and I bought the PlusModel 'Road Signs Russian Eastern Front WWII' set (#060).

Now these signs look great, but.... what do they say?
I want to use some of the smaller ones, like the rectangular red one with a text like: "nrewb KHEB!" I would realy like to know the translations.

If I scan and post some of them here (with a bar through it to secure Plus Models copyrights), is someone able to translate them?

Or perhaps can I find somewhere the translations for this set (like on another thread if it was discussed before).

You can try here: http://www.rustran.com/ , but you'll need to enter the information in Cyrilic in order to translate it into English.

Okay, This is very Hard to read loking at a Lo-res image on the net, but I think I can help some. Mostly these are Town and Village signs. In general The ones with Excamation Points are Russian Slogans like Kills the Fascists! etc. The Ones with Numbers are Km Markers to Cities (actually Towns I've never heard of) For example, the one in the center top is Lvov 10Km The two smaller signes beneath say Bridge (MOCT) and Water (BODA). To the right of that is KPP (Command Center). Sign to the left of those two, the top word is LENFRONT (Lenningrad Front) Can't make out the words below that though.
Some of the cooler ones:
The White signs with black borders are directional with general direction: The two way one 2/3 down is USSR to the Left, Finland to the right, so the only way you could use it is if your Diorama was facing south! The right pointed arrow above it says Germany, the left facing arrow above that says Poland , The one in the bottom right says Prague in Cyrillic and Czech. The signto the left of that says Entry strictly prohibited!

If I could get a cleaner image I could read them all for you.

Вперед На Киев! is more like "push to Kiev" or "forward to Kiev"

I selected a few signs I would like to use purely on there looks to fit in the diorama.
I hope the scan is good enough; any bigger and the text becomes unreadable.

I gues the red sign is about Kiev than?

Paul, yes. Red sign is about Kiev.
On the poster written in red box: Military Komendant, Berlin
At the blue poster says: TELEPHONE
Above the blue poster, a white poster with the inscription: Evacuation point.
Sorry ,but I do not know how to convert a white poster with the Red text (can not find words).

The small red one is hard to read but the words I can make out indicate that it is a military sign ('voin'...) - mentions Red Army on second line. The main word is LOGOVO which is a town in the Pskovskaya Oblast (Pskov district). Perhaps a district headquarters sign or similar?

Oh and yes 'vpered' does mean 'forward' not 'next' strictly speaking.

Good thing also; I almost used "Evacuation point" or "Telephone" as a town name...

Just came up with 2 more questions:
- How did Russian/WW2 townname signs look? Those signs when you enter a town.
- Did Russian traffic signs differ a lot from European signs? Can I use European signs for Russian traffic signs?

Paul, I found a translation of white sign with red text. Aт plate written: warrior, in front of you fascists home base. (Berlin). Logovo is same as home base(in russian).
1.Townname Looked like white boards with black text (name of town)
2.The difference in marks was, and the majority.
1. The text is written in Russian
2. These were the boards, and sometimes poorly preprocessed
If you want to create a diorama, it is possible to use European sign, if the territory were occupied by Germans.

I'm planning a small sign on the telegraphpole and a sort of traffic sign in the front right corner. I was thinking about some Sovjet propoganda posters on the fence, but perhaps that's a bit overdone...
Truck will be weathered / dusted further in the colour of the road.

I just love those ZIS trucks!

The white poster actually has some grammar mistakes. But I cannot say how many for sure, because image is too small.
Word "ЛОГОВО" (logovo) means cave or hide out, and used only in refference to animals (or enemies like in this case). The "home base" will not be a very good translation for it, sorry. So last three words you can read as "the hide out of fashist beast". But sign like that would be hand-written and not an oficial poster/sign.

It's indeed a bit strange its an official sign.

I had hoped some of these signs were just common information and not directly refering to war / enemy /front etc. I guess I have to look a bit further or make them myself.



I almost forgot to mention that turned out to be a help Jim! Although I can't type Cyrilic letters; I can type English words and translate them into Russian, like:

Halt! = СТОЙ!
Bad road surface = плохая дорожная поверхность
One way road = одним путем дорога
Reduce speed = уменьшите(сократите) скорость
Road closed = дорога закрылась

This is kind of fun actually!

Glad to help. I don't have a Cyrilic keyboard either, but what I do is go into MS Word, open up the symbol library (in the Insert drop-down menu), type my word; then copy & paste into Rustran.

One way road - односторонняя дорога
Road closed - дорога закрыта.
I will not go in details, why I changed your translations, but Russian language is more complicated and words have to be changed, depending on situation. Otherwise it might not make any sense, like "одним путем дорога". If you know French or German, you will understand what I am talking about.

The Red Sign is Military Kommandant ,Berlin

Except, letters HMO CCCP make no sense... Should be HKO or MO. Off the top of my head I cannot say if the name for the Department of Defence was changed by the end of the war.

Translation will look like this "SOLDIER of a RED ARMY! In front of You is a BASEMENT of a fascisct animal". This time word ЛОГОВО (Logovo) means a MAIN BASE of an enemy (not a name of a city).
