As footage was being shown of the Russian military moving into South Ossetia, I noticed a T-62 chugging along as part of an armoured convoy. Here's a still -
Recently, as footage is being shown of Russian units along the road north of Gori, more footage of these tanks is appearing, with entire units apparently fielding them. I'd be curious about building one of these - I'm guessing with the Tamiya kit as the base - but I'd need some kinda after-market "upgrade" set to bring it up to looking like the one on the pic. Do you guys know which model/variant/etc. these T-62's are? And, if so, if any conversion kits are available to build this variant? Thanks!
Tommy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like a T-62A with Slat armour and that box above the barrel (not sure if it is a search light, or a range finder or some other instrument aiding in the firing on the main gun), it doesn't appear to have any real modification, but I'm no tank nut, so don't take my word for it

The slat add ons are strange to see on a T62.

Regarding the slat armour - yeh, that's actually what piqued my curiousity. I'd never seen it before on Russian vehicles, although I've recently seen it in footage like this on T-62's and a BTR or two. Video footage should be viewable from quite a number of news reports of the last 36 hours dealing with "Russian pullout/Gori" etc.
This is something I'd like to build if I can, but I'm really hoping there's a kit for all this additional metal which is festooning these tanks, as building it all from scratch looks like it'd be headache-material...

First, you may want to wait for whenever Trumpeter comes out with their T-62 kit. May be a wait...
Second, the tank is indeed Russian. And they have been using slat armor since the Afghanistan war they were in during the 1980's. Also in use in Chechnya.
As for the exact model, it does not appear to have the AAMG mount and it does not have the extra armor on/around the gunners hatch, so I will guess it is a T-62M m1985. SP Designs can get you close, but not all the way... Check here.
The box over the main gun is indeed a retrofitted laser rangefinder.
If you must convert the Tamiya kit, it will require not only a new turret, but also new tracks and some extra details. More on what you would need to do if you look through the threads on this website.

Gudday Jaques!
Wow... the SP designs kit looks good, but above & beyond that it looks like I'd be in for a LOT of work in building this tank. I think I might hafta keep this one in the back of my mind for future attention a few years down the track...

The slat armor on that T-62 is really cool. Maybe someone will produce an aftermarket set for the Trumpeter kit when it comes out.

Ahhh, yes...the very elusive Trumpeter T-62.
I'll guess we'll see it when we see it.
