Russia vs Georgia War= new kits????
Posted: Friday, August 22, 2008 - 02:50 AM UTC
With all the new interest in moderan Russian/ Soviet armor that this war, or what ever it is being called, has created do you think we will see new kits? I know that OIF and the first GUlf war spawned alot of M1, and some new T-72 and conversion sets. I was just wondering if you guys that the kit makers would bring out any revised kits of the BMP or other items.

Besides the future release of BMP-3 from Trumpeter, to go along the SKIF version, i don't see anyone coming with new stuff (praying for a T-90..).
Also they're planning a T-62.
In the news we see plenty of BMP-2's, some BMD's(which version ??), some T-72's and T-62's.

It did get me to buy the T-72B w/EDZ from Revell. I've heard it's not the best but it'll look the part. A BMD-2 would be next.
They're just vehicles you don't see every day that do spark an interest. I doubt anything new will come out because of this.

There have been BMP-1's & 2's, and also BMD-1's and 2's from what I've seen. However, confirmation of specific letter-type-designations/variants/etc. would require someone more informed than I.

As seen on TV and photographs. All in 1/35 scale:
ATGMs( Konkurs, Metis)-none
BM-21 Grad on Tatra 8X8 truck - dunno, probably none
BM-21 Grad on Ural truck- ICM/Alanger (horrid molding quality)
BMP-1/2- DML resurrected in Revell/Zvezda/Hobbycraft boxes. Below average kit by today standards
BMD-1/2- Zvezda/Eastern Express. Zvezda offering is a winner here
BTR-60 based comms. vehicle- Panzershop
BTR-70/80- DML and its re-packs by Revell (BTR-70 only), Zvezda (both kits). Just like their BMPs
Cobra light armored vehicle-none
Dana SPH- Panzershop
D-30 towed Howitzer- Skif
HUMVEE-Tamiya
Smertch MLRS-none
T-55-Tamiya
T-62-Tamiya, but this kit is really old and appears to be in 32nd scale rather than 35th.
T-72AV- none
T-72B- DML/ Revell/Zvezda (simply terrible kit), Tamiya+Miniarm builds into an accurate model
T-72B(M)- Tamiya+Miniarm
Tochka-U S2S missile complex-sadly none
Tunguska SPAD vehicle- Jadar full resin kit (not worth its price IMHO)
Uragan MLRS-none
Various Military cargo trucks and civilian vehicles- one big gap
Vasilek Automatic Mortar-none
Air Assets- better ask Aeroscale pros
If you are looking for easy oob build, your only options are either Tamiya T-55 or their HUMVEE

Apart from the URAL and GAZ truck kits, I did see a Trumpeter ZIL-157 truck kit (the Abkhazians appear to have had a few of these chugging around), but there's (I think) a few more models (ZIL-131?) in between these old trucks and the newer URAL models which I can't recall seeing anything for... There's also some Military Wheels kits for those little UAZ jeeps that seem to go beetling around everywhere in both militia and civilian use - although only the older makes. I think there's also a few modern U.S. army truck (M923/M925?) model kits which might be useful for depiction of Georgian forces.
One thing I notice with the majority of the truck/jeep kits that I found for use depicting the Russian/Ossetian/Abkhazian side is that they're ridiculously expensive...

Also Skif made an MT-LB and MT-LB with twin 23mm:
Good basic kit, with Fruil track and Eduard pe, should look pretty good.

Actually - that reminds me: is there a stand-alone kit for the dual-23mm gun (ZU-23/2?)? I've only seen it so far supplied as part of truck/AFV kits...

Everyone calls the DML/ Revell/Zvezda T-72B terrible or junk, exactly what is the problem with it?
Is it that it's just not accurate? Thanks for any anwers guys.

Although this may be slightly off topic, but still related to the absence of good quality modern Soviet/Russian kits, what I can't understand is how Trumpeter bring out the PT-76 rather than the T-62.
I would have thought the T-62 would have shifted more units, spawned lots of magazine and internet coverage and been greeted with the same enthusiasm as Tamiya's T-55...provided it was accurate of course!
Although having said that the PT-76 may be a more popular topic in markets other than Western Europe and the USA...
In the mean time I'll just have to hold out for that T-62
Cheers October

I'd have to agree. But I think Trumpy is teasing us with that T-62.
