Hello,

I have a further Question because the T72B.

After I had studied my References I could not find a photo with mounted ERA Blocks on a T72B. All photos showed this tank in a "preparation" stage, like this:

http://www.t-72.de/html/t-72b_25.html

http://www.t-72.de/html/t-72b_14.html

Photos of T72B with ERA looks like demonstration purposes! All tanks were in very good conditions.

http://www.t-72.de/html/t-72b_15.html

As References I used both T72`s books from Concord and the one from Osprey, all by S.Zaloga. Sorry, but I have no scanner so that I cannot show you these photos, but the link is an typical example.

My conclusion is at this point that ERA Blocks were not used in the Sovietarmy, only for demonstration purpose. This would not be unusual, compared with the british Army and their Challenger 1 and 2. The additonal armour is only used in "hot action" like in Iraq. Of course, I am not sure if I am right so that comments are welcomed.

moreover one more question. Is this T72B from the time of the first Chechnya War??

Thank you for your help,

Best regards,

Moritz

I don't think so,

Fe if you look at the T-64s and T-80s that were stationed in Eastern Europe during the Cold war, they had ERA blocks fitted.

Hope that helps.

Yes, the Soviet Army used K-1 ERA on T-72B. I do not have a photo to immediately imbed here, but rest assured that they did indeed mount the bricks on the tanks. Look for use of T-72B in Chechnya and you will find it easy to see them fitted on vehicles NOT being used for demonstration.
