Nice shots Jim, the commanders cupola is more or less same as Tamiya kit. It has the idf mount for MG. The Tiran is also a Czech type and has lots of differences on the engine deck not possible to build from ANY kits. Eduard do an etch set for the Czech deck, but its very basic... scratch building is the only way. Most parts for the Tiran are best from the Blast set, although depending on budget....Legend do a set which is considerably cheaper. By the way if you want some Tiran parts, i have plenty of bits you can have. Also notice the forward fuel cell is of the earlier type and not the same as Tamiyas.

Interesting facts about the different kits (especially the bad ones).

Now I understand the Trumpeter T-55 & Ti-67 is bad. But where does it sit with the kits above ?

Cheers

Paul

Some of the Trumpter T-series tanks were made with a type of styrene plastic that required some searching to find a glue that would work. They are more accurate than the Lindberg kit. The Lindberg kit had simplified details and a toy-like look. It was, the first modern Soviet tank kit since the old Tamiya T-62, which is why it was Squadron's kit of the year. But when the Esci T-55, T-55(M) and Ti-67 came out, the Lindberg kit became disposable. The Lindberg kit was a 3-in-1 kit and you could build any one of several versions out of the same box. Esci made it one version per box.

Hi, the tank of the movie is a t-55, with IDF modification Tiran 5
the modifications are:

replacement of the S100 russian cannon for the L7 105 "Shyrar",
replacement of coaxial PKT to .30 CAL
replacement of the external MG to the .30 CAL
added rear hammock on hull, spare track links and jerry holders on turret.
replacement of IDF used communication set
front mudguards,
replacement of the front lights US style.

the tiran 5 used in the movie was modifiyng to reprecent a russian tank, with remove of the spark track link in the turrer, and rear storage bin, and use of .50 in the palce of the .30 loaders MG, with the replacement of the canon for russian style

I hope that help Suar

Thanks Suar !

Your help and that of the others, as well as the photo's are a great help.

I'd love to see some close up shots of the Tamiya kit to compare it to this Trumpeter version I have. The Commanders periscopes look orginary for starters on this Ti-67.

Cheers

Are you serious? Thats what this tread is all about. Read the whole thing. There is a good description of it on page 1 by Sabot. Bottom line; its junk and not worth it.

Hi Paul

: if you ever decide to add the "soviet-ish" helicopter to keep company to your tank, it's a French-built Super Frelon, and there's a 1/35th scale kit made by Heller (the one in the movie looks like the variant used by Israel) :

Hi Frenchy !

That would be a great idea - thanks ! Unfortunately my brain is getting ahead of my modelling speed. I'm thinking 5 builds ahead of my current one

Lets see:

ASLAV 25 in process (waiting on MH bits).
Kosovo Leopard 2A5 (ready for prime - not much to go)
Australia "What if ?" Leopard 2A6 (AS2) - can't wait to start this in the next couple of weeks !!
SP Designs T-80U
Miniarm T90A Conversion using Tamiya T-72
The Beast (TI-67 / T55)
Then either a STRV 122 or the Phase III ASLAV PC.
etc

Crikey I need to get moving

Cheers

I've been thinking about that point you've made above Gino (given I have the Trumpter kit here).

AND thanks for those great links !!!!

I may get the Tamiya kit, and use some of the Ti-67 bits from the Trumpter model to change the look.

I haven't decided yet and given the "squillions" I'll be spending on SP Design and MIniarm conversions over the next couple of months, it may be time to cut back on the $'s.

In the end though I'm not entering this in any competitions etc. I'm doing it as a bit of a fun. Having said that though I don't want it to be junk either.

It'll be quite a while before I start anyway (as you can see from my post above).

Dean I imagine in the end it'll be up to you.

If you want to build a model and have it "look" like the "Beast" it may not matter if you used the 'Trumpeter Ti-67' (which goes for peanuts here at some stores). A Tamiya T-55 will probably cost 3 to 4 times as much.

Check this out Dean / Guys:

http://www.track-link.net/gallery/3302

I just found it !!

It was done by Christian Donolato (using the Trumpeter kit) over at TrackLink. As I've said I'm no Soviet Armor expert so I have no idea if this looks the part or not.

What do you all think ?

Cheers

If you read the thread again.. i did offer you ALL the parts for the Tiran conversion, which is what the tank is. They took off some fittings here and there but the brackets etc still remain. Ditch the Crap Trump kit and get the Tamiya kit. Any money spent on the Tump kit is a waste of money.

I thought I should resurect this thread... I just watched the movie again

Perhaps its time to get this one on the bench (along with so much other stuff ).. once I finish the T-72A.

I've just ordered the Legends Tiran 5 conversion (looks like I'll only be using a part of that kit to make this 'Beast').

I just need to get some good AM tracks, any tips ? I'm thinking Fruilmodel

I have:

Tamiya T-55A
Legend Productions IDF Tiran 5 Conversion LF1052 (on the way)
TaNK "Russian Modern Tank Crew " (Summer)

Fruilmodel tracks ?

Anything else ?

Cheers

Where did you manage to find the Tank modern crew? I have a request in at the Barrel Store when Ed gets them in but they are still showing out of stock and it's been months.

Hi Bill !

I got them from "AFV Modeller" Web Shop in the Uk.

The postage was quite quick also:

It looks like the Summer Crew are in stock - the Winter Crew are Out of Stock though..

Having watched the film over the festive season I'm looking foward to this!
You could use use the Trumpeter kit, the TI-67 although everyone slates the kit
but with a bit of work it could look half decent. There are plenty of Aftermarket sets available and reference. So it could look half decent with abit of work. Also the Trumpeter kit is being built in constructive criticsm section it doesn't look that bad. Do you have plans for a diorama or just the single AFV?

Thanks Guys !

James I'll be using the Tamiya Kit, Fruils, and the Legends conversion (with bits left off to make it look like the screen shots in this thread)

I have the Trumpeter kit so maybe I'll build it along side the Tamiya kit !!

Wow that might be the go - a bit of a comparison and learning experience with the weathering, paint, dust etc... I think I'm onto something there

Yes Jon - heaps of dust.... Aren't those screen shots of the movie great ? Look at the crew faces, the dirt, dust, and grime everywhere... AWESOME !!

Yes Bill, there is a good selection at AFV - this is my first dealing with them and I had no issues. Although I haven't heard back from them when I asked about the restock timing of the Winter Tank Crew...

Cheers

I'm still planning on doing 'The Beast" here

Too many projects, too little time

Any tips on the base color to use on this machine (pics on page 1 of this thread).

Cheers
