Don't know what a canvan is, but it looks like a Dshk 12.7 ammo can to me.

Exactly my thoughts,

The diagonal strap looks like how the ammo can is held in the bracket...

What's a canvan? Not being sarcastic, I've never heard of one and I'm curious.

I guess if we were on the streets of Italy, we'd all be perfectly understood.
Ciro, there are different styles of ammo cans for the DshK, and they're produced in a lot of different countries. Go with it, it'll work.

When I was in Italy, I found that the only perfectly-understood language between drunken USN sailors and drunken Italian sailors was poorly-sung Bon Jovi karaoke I've got no problems with the Italians since they and I both spoke that language while I was in La Maddalena.

Hateto tell y'all, but that is not a 12.7mm ammo can. I have not one but two original cans, and they lack that funny lip that you see in shadow. I can try but will not promise that I can get pics up of them

yeah, that diagonal thingy is to hold it on the turret. if you look real carefully you can see the three lines on the ammo box and a corner of the ammo box cut off diagonally like in the DShK ammo box (i think i said "ammo box" too many times just then).

the ammo box in the original photo is an ordinary DShK box. i have no doubt about it.

You have every style of ammo can for the Dshk? It's an ammo can for a Dshk, hate to tell you.

I do not have for every type I am sure, but I have 2 original 12.7mm Dshk USSR cans! The are the type that have holes in the body so they do not seal, are not perfectly square, have ta "slot" with assistance roller on it, as seen in one of those pics above. Like I say, I will try but not promise to get a pic of one to noight, as I use it to store my airbrush compressor. the other is in the shed out back, I think, and is painted a totally different color.

A friend brought them from the USSR when there was still a USSR during the perestroika period of glastnost.

SORRY IF MY SPELLING IS POOR.

I am at work so it is not like I can casually set here and type at my leisure!

Hey, forgot to mention that International Military Antiques and Sportsmans Guide (thru IMA) both have th 7.62 cans for sale, and neither are that particular can. I have no idea what that is on there, and am no expert in armor to be sure, but it does not easily fit the "standard" 12.7 and 7.62 Russkie cans.
