Hello everybody!
Waiting for my shippment of new kits to arrive and having some problems with a winter camo on my demag, I decided to make a short build log of the Dragon 1/35 SSy Schwerer Plattformwagen Railcar.
Thanks again Jim for the opportunity to build this kit! I hope I'll do you justice.
So, let's go directly to the assembly:
First step is to put the whole bridge together.
Any comments or suggestions are welcome!
Regards,
A. W.

Nice one, I´ll be watching your progress, I love everything on railway and unfortunately there is just very few 1/35 kits like that.

Nice, I'll be watching this one. It's a real pity there aren't many 1/35th railway items. A.W. are you going to place any vehicle on it or just cargo?
Also, how is the grain on the bed, would it need replacing with thin wood strips?

A.W.,
I'll also be looking forward to this build. I've been trying to get my hands on this kit for about 6 months....just won't pay the crazy $$ these are going for. Hopefully the prices will normalize with Trumpeter's offerings.
Is it possible for you to post a picture of the deck from the underside? Looking at the close up of the top and side, I wonder how hard it would be to replace the plastic wood with real wood.....
Many thanks and enjoy!
Mike

Hi Aenea
I have never built a rail car or anything that rides on RR tracks so I will be following this build. An underside pic would be great.

I built this kit a few years ago OOB, and its quite nice. If you use Trumpeter rail tracks (in a larger setting)... keep the wheels as far apart as possible. Dragon´s are set slightly narrower. Also watch out for the decals ... mines started to fall apart when lifting them off the backing film. Otherwise it should build up nicely.

Hi Mark
The PzIV being loaded is the 3cm Kugelblitz, It was an actual test vehicle and not just a paper panzer. Dragon released a kit of this tank a few years back, and I think Verlinden had a conversion of this vehicle.

Hey guys
Thanks for your support! But I'm a bit afraid of ruin this jewel by my lack of skills... I'll try to give my best
The SSy is gonna be a vignette to present my finished tanks on it.
Here are some better pics of the woodgrain and an underside shot. If you want to replace the plastic wood by the real thing, I dont think it's very difficult. You just have to build up the frame but leave the woodplanks out. So you can put the woodstrips on top. But they have to be very thin. I like it, as it is, so I go with the plastc thing.
Hope I explained it correct. If you need more shots just ask!
Enough blabla

I redid mine with real wood. I don't remember the brand name but the thickness and width matched perfectly, You just have to cut them to length.

I did both.
I built it with the plastic deck and it looked horrible, so, I stripped off the panels and started cutting planks out of, I think, basswood. (This was quite a while ago, before I came here.)
Wood takes stains and scuffing so much more realistically than the plastic does.
Not to take away from anything you've done. It looks good so far.

That wood pattern looks like the real thing! I'm sure you gonna make a nice model of it.

Good evening chaps!
I found a possibility to get such thin wood. I never tried to paint actual wood from plastic. I wonder how it'll look like.
Could you guys show me some pics of your finished model with wood or plastic? That would be very nice.
Here's some progress I made:
The wheel brakes:
The whole piece:

Looking good Aenea. It would look cool with real wood I think, but i've never built a rail car so I don't know how easy it would be. I think your doing a good job with the kit, keep us posted on your progress.

In case some of you guys who like railroad models were'nt aware, there is a railroad campaign just starting on the Model Geek page of this website. It has a nice build time and is open to any rail based work. Cuhail is leading the campaign and you can contact him if you have any questions as to what he will accept for the campaign!

This is the Ssys straight from the box with the plastic "wood" which is quite good IMO, and easy to paint.

Hey guys!
It's been a long time since my last afv post. Anyway, thanks for you replies - Frank, your model is just great!!! -.
Now I have recieved some wood which will be very interesting to paint and weather
But first the chassis. Painted and the two wheel cars. I thought I'd pick out some details by brush to make it more interesting. It'll tone done with filter, wash and further weathering.
Gloss coat is on, next will be the decals...

Thanks very much Jon. If you see AW´s image of the woodgrain .....
... its actually quite pronounced. Paint each board with a slightly different shade to simulate different planks. Make sure paint is not too thick to clog the detail. Then a few washes and a very, very light dry brush with a very light colour (buff?), to pick out the raised grain. Add a very dark brown or black wash between each board to give defination. Its quite easy ... much easier than paintng or staining real wood in my opinion. Here´s another, done in the same way.
Hopefully this helps some.

Nice work A.W. with your progress, looking good. Don't see too many rail cars, are you planning a diorama setting for it?

Thank you very much for the nice comments!
Show more of your railcars if you're working on one! It's nice to see different approaches.
A little update, I cut out the wook-planks, glued them on and gave them and oilwash. Next will be some more weathering.
I'm gonna put the railcar in a small vignette to take pictures of my builds that I have finished. But if I have a good diorama idea I'll use it (never done a vignette or diorama before!)
