Isn't it just awesome to see a plastic manufacturer being quite original in their releases so early in the year? If Roden start 2009 and their new range this way, I can't wait to see what else they have lined up.

Judging from the Roden reviews on Aeroscale, their WWI aircraft kits (particularly the newer ones it seems) rate very well.

Yip saw this a few days ago, who'd a though there would be a Rolls Royce in 1/35 plastic. Looks like the 1920 version, I'll look forward toi seeing the review of this one when it comes out.

Great release. Hopefully there will be optional parts in the box, I'm planning to do an earlier one as used by the South Africans in German South West Africa.

Hey, Al, I'm a total novice on this vehicle, so:

1.) What makes it the 1920 version? and
2.) What would it take to "back date" it to the Arabian Peninsula in 1917-18?

I'm not joking about Lawrence. Fell in love with this AC when I saw the movie when it first came out (back when you got the Overture and Intermission music).

No expert on this one either. The 'El Lawrence' version would have had the spoked wheels and a slightly different turret. Here's a link to the review of the Resicast kit 1914 version which you will see is pretty outstanding:

There is a lot of useful infomration/pics and links I think in the discussion.

Whilst I am delighted to see a 1/35 plastic version I doubt if it will be a patch on Graham's kit, but I'd be happy to be proved wrong and will look forward to it's release and a review or two of the quality.

Quality aside it is great news as it makes this famous old girl available to many at hopefully a reasonable price. Hats off to Roden for branching out into something different. I wonder if they would consider doing a few British Trucks??

No the Roden one is the 1920 version. There may have been some of this type around in 1939 not 100% sure.

Actually the 1920 pattern RR was used during WW II.
At least one was used by RAF Regiment in NA. There are two photos of a burnt out with Rommel inspecting it. The car is in caunter, has sandtyres and has the same armament as the Fordsons (Boys, Vickers and a scarfering) . There is also at least one photo of a RAF 1920 pattern RR in Iraq during the war, again with sandtyres and in caunter, this one is named "Tigris" .
Also afaik some were used in England and Ireland post Dunkirk.
The photo posted here before are of some 1924 pattern RRs wich were indeed totally different, this photo was taken before the war, during the war they ha different turrets (Frazer-Nash) with Boys and Bren. With this turret they were named 1940 pattern.
They were used by 11th Hussars.

Thanks for the link to the site, some excellent references there. As I said I wasn't sure if the 1920s version was still around in 1939/40, but as you point out they were used by the RAF AC Regiment and it's possible this version was still in Army Service with some units. I don't recall saying it wasn't used in WW2

The version Nick asked about was the later 1940 pattern version you refer to in the picture I posed., and is completely different. I'm surprised that that version didn't come out first but with the release of one type in 1/35 plastic then who knows what might follow.

The 1920 version covers some 21/22 years so there should be ample opportunity for setting it in context depending on what one wants to model.

I'm looking forward to the release, it's another welcome addition to the list of British models.

Being from Sweden, english isent my native tounge, and sometimes the shade of meaning tends to be misenterpretated so I am sorry if you got me wrong, I just wanted to help out and make things a bit clearer.

The reason for the 1920 pattern rolls being released by Roden and not the 1940 pattern is Rodens "profile".
Roden does mainly WW I airplanes, among these a 1/32 scale series.
A Rolls to go with these was the intention, but since Roden doesent have much experience with PE (and as this would have raised the price conciderably) the 1914 variant was ruled out (it may come later, I dont know).
The 1940 pattern (wich I would love) were however never as "famous" as the earlier RRs (1914 and 1920 pattern fex).
The reason for 1/35 insted of 1/32 is as following:
Even if its not ideal many modellers find it easier to combine a vehicle in 1/35 with an airplane in 1/32, to combine two vehicles (or airplanes!) in different scales is much harder.
The number of AFVmodellers that will actually buy a 1/35 kit is probably larger than the number of aircraftmodellers that will NOT buy a 1/35 kit, prefering a 1/32 kit.
I and Rodens management had the same opinion on this from the very start, there was never any doubth.
I havent seen the kit yet but will receive a sample next week, I really look forward to it.

Hi Eric,

No worries, I am by no means any kind of expert on this vehicle, so the information and links were most useful. I had in fact forgotten about their use by the RAF who used them extensively for airfield defence and patrol. What always struct me as odd was that the whole concept was dreamed up by an RN Officer, so there is probably a whole other area to be investiagted there, again offering more choice.

I think it is a very bold move by Roden and most probably 1/35 against 1/32 a good marketing choice and I understand the aircraft/vehicle connection you're making.

I am fairly sure it will prove a popular model as a 1/35 plastic kit has been sought after by many for years, and look forward to getting the low down on the kit.

It's an interesting chain of thought Roden has, so lets hope it's a success and extends further to the odd supply truck or water bowerer again in 1/35

Now that's a cool idea

I have now received some preproductionsprues of the chassie, wheels and engine.
the details look very nice, actually its more detailed than I thought it was going to be.
The bodywork and turret will hopefully soon follow.
