My LHS has a couple on offer at the knockdown price of 9 Euros.
I know that the kit is 1980s vintage, but is it a low-quality caricature? Or actually a fairly decent representation of a T-62 and thus possibly worth a punt?
9 Euros for a 1/35 kit is after all an attractive price in these credit-crunch times.

Well, it looks like a T62 but thats about it. THe turret is all wrong, the engine deck has all kinds of issues. Cookie Sewell did an article years ago about bringing it up to snuff - but he did alot of surgery on the kit to make it accurate. Have you tried searching the site on T62 threads? I know this is a pretty common question. But for 9 euros it looks like a duck........

For all its problems it still hangs together well and, while it may not look exactly like a T-62, it still looks very Russian and very large. For nine euros you'd be a mug not to - even if you never build it, some mad collector will take it off your hands via eBay for a bit more than that.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Chris - I haven't had the time to scour the site for reviews and read 'em. I do recall reading somewhere that (IIRC) the engine deck angle was too flat and that the turret was 2 mm too shallow. But to be honest, given that neither myself or anyone seeing the thing here will be going at it with blueprints and a pair of calipers, the latter doesn't really bother me too much.
I was looking at it more in terms of a low-stress, throw-together build for in between more complicated projects, so was more concerned about fit issues and the like, although at least a degree of accuracy would be a bonus. So if as you say Sean it hangs together well, I might just pick one up. I think you're right - I'd be a mug not to at that price!

The turret is also elongated at the front when it should be perfectly round. It looks very wrong to anybody who's ever seen a T-62. Trumpeter's kit should be out this summer (officially in July, if they keep to their schedule).

Aha
Which probably explains why yon hobbyshopman is keen to offload his surplus Tamiyas for a knockdown price, while he can still shift 'em.

I built my as a practice kit to get ready for the Trumpeter one when it comes out. I tried to detail it out with out fixing any of the dimentional issues (and there is alot of them). I learned alot about the T-62 in doing so. I didn't use any after market items and all the details were scratch built or taken from the spares. Here it is.

Roy - dimensional issues or not, your build turned out looking very nice indeed. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I was thinking along similar lines, i.e. a "practice" build to try out a couple of new (for me anyway!) techniques like applying "Mr. Surfacer" to get turret casting texture , which is something that I've never used before but which a lot of guys seem to swear by.
Regarding the Trumpeter release, according to the 2009-10 Trumpeter catalogue two T-62 releases are slated for release (which was news to me), namely the 1962 and 1972 models. So we could be spoiled for choice.

I got my Tamiya T-62A from a Swap & Sell for 10 Australian dollars knowing that Trumpeter was going to release theirs soon. It seems to be more like 1/32 scale than 1/35 but goes together well without much putty needed. The kit is bagged for its inaccuracies but is rarely taken in context. Tamiya tooled this kit from grainy spy photos back when we thought they were going to drop the bomb. It looks Russian. It is a good kit and is still the only T-62 kit in town but at that price I would hold out for the Trumpeter kit. Here's my WIP.

save the cash and add to it, the Trumpeter one is just around the corner. It is bound to be far more accurate no matter what. Preliminary reports say it will be quite good

The part that always gets me is that lower front turret undercut, under the mantlet. No idea how that got there. The box top artwork is correct, but the kit...THAT is what keeps it from being a ok kit in my mind, all other problems aside, you just can't look at the kit without seeing that huge, glaring error.

Trumpeter always has a kit due out around the corner. Hopefully, their T-62 sereis will see the light of day in the near future.

Len, what tracks do you have on your T-62? Just curious.

I may be wrong but those tracks look a lot like the ones in the old ESCI T-55 kits...
