I have been working on Tamiya's King Tiger with Porsche turret off and on for about six months now and I have finally completed the construction of this kit. It took so long because I used more aftermarket accessories than ever before, including Royal Model photoetch, Atak zimmerit, Jordi Rubio barrel, and Model Kasten tracks. It was a lot of fun working with all these different mediums, so for me it was worth the extra money. I hadn't realized it when I started, but, though I have used PE enough to be quite comfortable with it, this is the first time I've used what one would call a "real" PE set. The sun was out today, so I took lots of pictures.

As you can see, I left the fenders off to show the nice MK tracks (it's pretty neat how they go together; try them sometime everybody) and, as seems to be common with King Tiger models, I left a few tow cables and tools missing from my tank.

The JR barrel is made of two parts. A turned aluminum barrel and a white metal muzzle brake.

The one remaining tow cable on the tank was scratch built. I twisted seven pieces of copper wire together and stuck them into the reworked ends from the Tamiya kit.

The entire turret and back hull piece are replaced with resin parts from the Atak zimmerit set. The back hull was warped slightly, but cyanoacrylate held it in place nicely. The grey resin parts came with the Royal Model etch set.

A placed some stowage on the back. These include the Tamiya kit's jack, updated with RM photoetch, a Verlinden helmet, with a chin strap added using lead foil and a PE buckle, and a Verlinden German jerrycan.

Here's a close up of the tow cable I made. The Royal Model clamps hold it in nicely. To get the haphazard look of the stowed cable, I must admit I copied Mario Eens' Henschel Turret King Tiger as seen in Military Modelling Magazine or at Missing Links.

The wire going to the headlight was made from lead wire. The Atak zimmerit sheets to cover the hull front and sides are extraordinarily thin.

I made the two parts of the gun barrel cleaning rod (I think that's what it is) out of styrene rod. I drilled holes in the end and in one end of each added a thinner piece of rod.

No targets yet. The RM PE set included parts for the insides of the hatches as well.

Quite blurry, I had wanted to show off my superdetailed fire extinguisher. At least you can sort of see it. I used pieces from two Royal Model PE sets, as well as my own copper wire, styrene rod, and lead foil.

Now I just have to paint it....... and decal it........ and weather it......... and add some figures............. hmmm............................

Thanks for the comments, guys.

I don't know if it's possible to change this, but I see that I posted this in the Armour Forum while it should probably be in the Rivet Reviews Forum. Sorry about that.

I don't think it'll really matter Nic - people will be attracted to your nice modeling and comment on it - where ever you put it!

You're off to a great start Nic! I like all the added details, and can certainly appreciate the pics prior to painting as sometimes those little details you take time to install get blended in with the rest of the model and can become lost.

sweeeet, man nice work, that looks great. you say the atak zimmerit is very thin, was it easy to apply? I have the same kit "on deck" so to speak, and was dreading the zimmeret application.

The Atak zimmerit is pretty easy. The only hard part is that the superglue sets quickly so you have to line it up right the first time. As I previously alluded to, the turret, mantlet, and back hull are thicker resin pieces meant to relplace the entire Tamiya part in those cases. The hole in my mantlet would not accept the barrel properly, so I had to fiddle around with that for a while, but eventually got it to work.

Camo will be the dark yellow, dark brown, dark green three-tone version. I am going to use Archer dry-transfers to represent tank 122 of sPzAb 503 in Normandy. This particular tank was knocked out by a British Sherman ramming it. If Dragon would rerelease their M4A4s, I might be able to make a dio of the event some day.

See what happens when the site goes down for less than a day? "The Brothers F," Faust and Folgore both submit pics of excellent models dressed to the nines. Great job. Maybe Jim ought to plan periodical outages.

Now I am going to have to start my Tiger. Thanks for sharing...

Good job so far Nic....I love what you have done to your KT ...One thing I noticed with the Attak turret is that it comes with the binocular site ...Check your info before you paint it .But most tigers had this site changed to the monocular site and a plug welded in place ..

The turret and aluminium barrel look like the real thing. Only a pro can achieve this.

I did some looking around and determined I should indeed fill one of the sights. So I did. Thanks for the heads up, Richard.

Once again, thank you all for your encouraging comments. I hope to be able to show you some truly finished products soon. I've got a lot of models built and ready for painting right now.

Bravo!! It is almost a shame to paint with so much detail added. But I'm sure the paint will turn out fantastic. Great work!!
