There is no telling how messy it will end up, the tank I model after wore unusual 3-piece camo and had miild amount of dirt on it; gotta watch the video again.

Good to see some more work on this George, I like the extra work on the heads of the tankers. Nice mustache!

Interesting choice for the green also, I wouldn't have thought of that. Can be tough to choose colours for modern Russian armour huh?

Just got the overall camouflage done. I decided to repaint base green with Tamiya Olive Green+Khaki in 2/1 ratio. From now on I think I will stick to this specific mix as 4BO for all Russian AFVs, 50's to Present. The sandy yellow strips were a bit problematic the video material I use was shot in pre-digital age, so it took a while to realize what shade these were and whether or not they were coupled with gray strips. In the end I opted for mix of XF-4, XF-1 and Buff in equal proportions. Black strips are just flat black

Fantastic camo George, thats real first class work! By the way where did you get the era tiles from, are they modelpoint parts?

No, ERA blocks used are standard issue from Miniarm's T-72B turret and front hull sets, I skipped the the hull part since it was late type.

Thanks for that, Miniarm don't sell these as seperate components do they? I'm looking for some ERA blocks for a future project and I'm finding it hard to track down some of the Modelpoint ones.

Jon, their web site doesn't list ERA only sets for sale, so most likely no. You can contact them and try to work out some sort of a special deal, but others who tried buying direct from them were very unsatisfied, to say the least...
Sean I started working on this build in mid May of 2009 and my T-72A was rather spontaneous move (I'm a compulsive buyer when it comes to scale model, just today I bought brand new F-22 Raptor and a bunch of resin for it at LHS in what began as a quick run for a couple of paint bottles). But yes it's good to see people taking interest in the Red Steel and T-72's (they are easiest of 64/80/84/90 lineup to model), maybe plastic kit manufacturers finally give us some love...

Thanks George, I'll keep looking for some of the modelpoint sets I guess. Thats interesting to hear about Miniarm, I've never ordered direct before from them, I'll stick with using their distributers!

Mud, and lots of it...
I used baking soda and white glue to recreate texture of the extensive dirt a semi-dry mud stuck around the tub. Atop that, I applied varying shades of MiG and CMK pigments mixed with Mr. Hobby Flat Base their clear varnish and Mr. Retarder to prevent mixture from drying too quickly. Seems to work out okay in the end, but you be the judge

I think you solved my problem and that was recreating the look of dried mud with something inexpensive. I take it you used a decent amount of baking soda because after a while it starts to dissolve into solution and the effect is lost.

VERY nice. What kind of base/scenery do you have in mind?

No, it took about one table spoon of soda to make it. I didn't mix glue and soda together, but rather applied glue first and after a minute or two rubbed soda into it. Also, to prevent crumpling, when dried, I sprayed a lacquer based varnish onto it.

I've done weathering running gear and tracks. Nothing innovative, just CMK's light rust and sandy dust mixed together to give that characteristic pink shade as it appears in the video, mixed with enamel thinner and applied with old brush. I sprayed some Mr UV Cut Clear onto dried pigment to seal it and applied MiG's European earth into creases and recesses in between ERA blocks. Dried splashes were simulated MiG Vietnamese Earth using old tooth brush and lacquer thinner.
Edit: I also washed it with balck+wood brown oil paints

Hey George, your T-72 is looking really good so far!!! I especially love the wet look of the mud, what did you use to get the water stain in the mud? Nice and convencing looking so far.

Tamiya Clear over the MiG pigment. Seals it away from the elements and stays glossy for a long, long time. I've tried to do the same with CMK powders, but got spongy blobs combing up on their own; must be something in their formula.

Cool George, I'll have to try it out. I only have mig pigments so I don't have to worry about the spongy blogs. Keep up the good work.

Almost done; just need to add antenna and chose final stowage layout. I had to use phone camera, so not the most spectacular picture quality there, sorry.
