On eBay.de there's currently one up for auction, and bidding is currently at EUR 55.90 with 2 days still to go.

So my question is: has this kit gone OOP, or is it simply a case of two dumb-asses engaged in a bidding war (given that these things can get personal if you're silly enough to let them)?

And a question about the kit itself: Am I right in thinking that it's a reasonably accurate kit OOB - but only if you want to build it as an East German tank?

Hi Steve

that price for a t-72 is insane the kit is on production and you can get it for 30-45usd on many stores so dont panic, and yes the kit is a version of a DDR tank but the best basis for many conversions

Squadron shows it in stock at $46 USD. And yes, the Tamiya kit is an exacting replica of a small batch of about 12 tanks built for the East German NVA, because that happened to be the variant displayed in the museum they visited. It has the applique plate molded to the glacis, so backdating the kit is awkward without a lot of surgery. Most tanks with that hull had a more heavily armored turret with a less circular shape when viewed from above. There are aftermarket turrets available in resin, or you can resculpt the kit turret with some epoxy putty.

Thanks gentlemen. That rather confirms what I thought.

I do actually have one untouched in the stash that I paid around GBP 27 for (that's about EUR 30 at the current exchange rate) at my LHS the last time I was back in the UK earlier in the year. I just happened to stumble across this one while browsing German eBay at the weekend, and the price it's reached rather took me by surprise.

To use the phrase often employed in build logs here, "I'll be watching this one closely" - just to see what dizzy, crazy heights the bidding reaches when the auction ends. The bidders in this case obviously have more money than sense.

I'd say! I bought one just last month online from netmerchants for about £20/25.

The hassle you'd avoid with a simple google search huh?
