Happy New Year everyone!

I've started Dragon's BRDM-2 sometime ago as a quick build. But like every build, it appears to be not so quick.

Here's the boxart:

I plan to finish this kit as this photo below:

I will send the photos of the current build status when I get back home this evening.

Before hand, I've got two questions:

i. What do you suppose the white areas on the sidewall are? Chipped areas?

ii. How can a mimick the darker stain on the lower hull between the wheelwells?

Best regards

The white area's could be paint oxidization (my best guess, can't really see too closely)

MIG's rain streak's may be a good try for that darker stain, I'd personally try a black or dark brown oil that has been diluted alot and applied as so.

If you plan to do that particular vehicle take note that the winch trap door is positioned on the right side of the vehicle in the photo, yet the kit has it in the center. Even their box art shows it in the correct position. I've seen a lot of BRDM-2s, incuding the one we took home, and have never seen it as it is in the kit. Not to say it was never done, but it certainly isn't common.
As for those lighter areas on the side, I don't think it is so much oxidation as it is the absence of it. That area is where your boots naturally rub the side as you are walking along the lip of the hull. More like shiny paint where the oxidation, grime, dust, etc. is being rubbed off.
Looking forward to seeing your progress.

I plan to finish the model in the weathering status of the vehicle in the photo. I most probably will use Soviet Naval Infantry scheme from the decals. But you are right about the trap door, in all the photos I have about the BRDM, I couldnt find one vehicle where the trap door is in center.

On the other hand, how do you think the white areas could be replicated on the model?

Well, since I believe those areas to be just shinier paint, and not actually white, I would do those sides in ultra flat (sometimes a bit of talcum powder in the paint helps) and then shine up the desired areas with toothpaint on the end of an eraser, or whatever method you like the best.
Another way would be to weather the entire arrea with pigments, and then wipe away the pigments from the shinier areas.

Drybrushing with a lighter shade seems to be another alternative.

The bottom hull, leaf springs and axles....

There are lots of sink holes in the bottom hull and it took some time filling them all with putty and sanding. By the way, a useful trick with Vallejo putty is to fill the gaps with the putty, wait about 45secs then swap the area with alcohol soaked cottonbud. This method usually eliminates the need for sanding.

Looks good so far! Nice trick with the Vallejo putty.
I´ve also built my 2 BRDM´s about 10 years ago. One from Dragon in an Iraq-scheme, the other one from Revell in the former eastern germany army... called NVA.

greetings...

It's been sometime since I've last updated this post.

The assembly of my BRDM2 has been 95% completed with the retractable tyres the only remaining unassembled parts.

I plan to apply an overall green scheme to the vehicle with the USSR Naval Infantry decals.

But, before this I have some questions in mind and hope that I can find some answers here

What is the color of the primer applied to BRDM2 in Soviet service under the green coat?

I think about using the hairspray technique for general chipping. The question is to decide on the level of weathered look.... Will it be realistic to see some not so minor chipping on this vehicle?

On the other hand, keeping in mind the fact that this vehicle belongs to naval infantry which steers me to think that there is a serious corrosive environment. Salt spray and etc.

Thanks for the information of the update.
I can not help you exactly with the base-color of the naval vehicles, but I think, it´s an other type of green color.
I found a photo which possibly shows 2 different green-tones.
But this is no naval-vehicle.

from: int-rel.com

One green at the vehicle, the other one at the wheels-part. The last one looks to me as a lighter green-tone.
Perhaps this helps.

greetings...

Nice camo scheme, on that last BRDM-2. I was thinking about doing one in Croatian colors, a vehicle that saw service in the Wars of Yugoslav Dissolution, with cool multicolor striped camo, which appears on Bison Decals' 1/72 Balkan Armor sheet. Unfortunately, Bison doesn't do this sheet in 1/35 scale. But I have some spare Coatian emblems left over, a 1/48 Blue Rider WW2 Croatian air force sheet I bought a few years ago, which I can use.
I like countries that paint their flag or emblem on their vehicles.

It is time for an update on my BRDM. Airbrushing is nearly done. I will begin filters soon.

It looks good so far. It's a shame to see how Dragon tooled this kit when you know how many of these BRDMs were available to take measures and draw accurate plans at the time they designed it.

Olivier and Tim, thank you.

I have applied 3 coats of filters so far. I will apply 2-3 more and take some photos using the same camera settings and lighting with the previous set. I wonder whether we will see any difference from the painting phase after filtering.

I will update soon keep in touch.

I have finished applying filters. There are a total of 6 layers of filters applied on different sections of the hull.

My BRDM gets near to the finish line.

Here's what I have done since the last update:

i. I have applied filters in grey and brown colors

ii. washed selectively to highlight details on the model.

iii. I have applied hair spray technic to the exhausts on both sides to show rust under the paint. It's been my first time using hair spray, but I've found it a great way for weathering. Can't wait to use it again on a winter wash scheme.

iv. Applied fading with oils on most of the vertical surfaces and top of the turret.

And finally some chipping to go with the rest....

Here are some photos:

Wow, I like the "used-look" of the vehicle!
On my different BRDM-2 variants, several rubber-wheels broke.
Better luck for your model!

Thanks Soeren

In fact I've increased the chipping since the photos and applied decals. Or I may say tried to apply the decals. They were really old and yellow and thick and

So I tried Microsol on the decals various coats without a good degree of satisfaction.

After that I've applied hairspray technique to the vehicle number decal to fade and chip it. It seemed nice to me.

I will take some shot and post them soon.

Until then thank you for looking and posting

Nice painting.
The external beam welder's protective grids perpendicular to the armor plate, in our model, however, the failure of the flaps of the opening hinges, glazing and the front protective armor plates, the carapace size of the nose.
The towing winch rope can do really have much to throw it.
Very nice work.

Anti Aircraft equipment I am building.
Pair it any ideas of their own SA-9 Gaskin/Strela-1.
Best regards, Gábor.
