Can anyone tell me what this man is doing in the picture? could he be loading bearings into reactive armour?

It looks like he was wishing he was somewhere else...
I do agree with Gerald, though, in terms of him doing the nut-n-bolt thing. It seems like there are a few washers in his stack of boxes, too.

I agree as well. There are stations behind him missing the blocks, so he probably got "caught" actually working....

It looks to be a T-72 M2. I'm pretty sure DML did a kit of a T-72 with ERA. Couldn't vouch for its accuracy if they did though.
