There are 6 bottles shapes object infront of the sd.sfz 222 as shown in the picture below.
Does anyone know what they are and what they are used for?
I have seen a number of sd.sfz 222 pictures...some of the vehicle has them and some of them dont...

Hey Mike,
IIRC, they are some type of smoke dischargers.
Cheers

Smoke candles. Early war German tanks had armored racks with a cable release mounted on the tail plate, allowing these to be dropped one at a time, so a tank could withdraw into its own smoke screen. Lashed to the front of an armored car, they'd have to be ignited and dropped by hand, I suppose.

The interesting thing is that most photos I have of the sd.sfz 221/222 show these missing, and usually having a large storage box on the front plate instead, which leads me to think that they probably were not widely used or installed, or simply removed by the crew. A fast glance through Tankograds sd.sfz 221/222/223 book, I didn't see any photos of these smoke candles, nor did they show up on my google search, except on photos of models.

The Ryton book on these vehicles contains a single example--a Sd.Kfz.222--with this modification (two photos; pages 112 and 113). The caption on page 113 reads, "Six compressed-air smoke bottles are clamped to the nose with cotton webbing for quick replacement." The vehicle was deployed to Tripoli in February, 1941, as part of a DAK recon unit.

John, Gerald,
thanks for the explanation, interesting to know what the are and how they are used.
Dave, you are right, I also noticed that most of the pictures that have these smoke candles are pictures of models instead of the real vehicle...
maybe these smoke candles are not standard issue or maybe once they are expanded, the crew would just throw away the unit that house them as well..
Eitherway, thanks all for sharing
