I tried googling "russian postbox" and got quite a few images.
it's one of those US/UK things - we post our letters in postboxes!!!

Here's one that should be OK for WW2 (minus the rectangular dark blue sticker )...But maybe one of our Russian members can confirm this

According to this website http://www.russianpost.ru/museums/ru/home/istoriy the first russian post boxes were indeed made of wood (they appeared in 1848) but as these boxes were lightweight and easy to steal, they were replaced with heavy cast iron ones (up to 45kg) and then with standardized iron ones with a bottom opening in 1910.
