Here's my 95% complete JS-2. I learned a few new tricks with this one, such as using linseed to create a spilled fuel effect. This was also my first attempt at taping and spraying with an airbrush, so I'm really happy with how the recognition stripes came out.

On the other hand, I attached the tracks (which I weathered off the tank) to the wrong side of the tank creating a slight mismatch between the return rollers and the track sag. Dumb, really dumb, but live and learn I suppose. My biggest disappointment (and biggest question) is around the weathering. I applied 5-6 overall washes with W&N oil paint thinned with turpenoid, a pin wash, 1-2 filters, and some oil fading, but the model still seems rather lifeless. So I'd really appreciate suggestions for livening up a green tank.

Oh - and one other thing - the real deal must have been one bad ass tank. Even the model looks intimidating.

My only comment on anotherwise great build is the turret air recogntion stripes - they are way too tidy. If you check your references you will see that they were "slopped on" freehand with wide brushes and whitewash.

To liven up the monotone tanks, I think figures or storage are the 2 best ways. At least you did the air recognition stripes.

Also, hard to tell from your pictures, but it seems you could possibly do your pin washes, and oil fading a bit heavier to bring out a little more contrast.

Mick - I hear you on the recognition stripes. Initially, I brush painted them to get the rough look of the tank in the photo you attached, but they looked awful. I don't want to blame it all on the Tamiya paint, but let's just say the experience persuaded me to switch to another brand for brush painting. Anyway, I dunked the turret in window cleaner, took it back down to the primer, and started over - this time time taping and spraying. So basically I agree with you, but went with what I thought would work, given my skill level (novice) and the materials I had on hand. This kit was so nice to build, though, that I'm seriously considering buying another one to take another crack.

Jesse - For whatever reason, I'm not a figure guy, but I think you're 100% correct about the washes ... I didn't go far enough. I may pick up a junk model just to see what happens when I weather to the extreme.

Just an idea... I've never tried it...

Try "ripping" some paint and using that to mask off the stripes. Then you should get an uneven border, but can still spray it.

Maybe a good idea for that junk kit to experiment with.

Bill, nice JS-2 you got there. Have one in my stash as well. A bit too clean and in too mint condition for an in-action tank but I like it this way. I think you did a great job breaking up the monotone green as well.

I wouldn't call you anovice by the way...

Cheers!
Stefan
