Hi All,

First off I know that the Tamiya T-62 is garbage, but what I'm not sure of is the dimensional differences between the Tamiya and Trumpeter kits? Is it as vast as the differences between the Skif and DML T-80 kits for example?

The only reason I ask is that I'm looking at getting some modelpoint conversion parts for the T-62 and they are only available for the old Tamiya kit. I'm not sure if they will fit on the Trumpeter kit. I don't mind doing some work of course to get them to work, but if the hull and turret dimensions are miles off I might end up better to scratch build the parts I'm looking for.

Any input or help would be much appreciated!

Dmitry I order all mine direct from Russia, armor35.ru has a good selection.

Tamiya kit is roughly 1/32 scale. The turret is complete garbage (wrong shape, incorrect undercut).

The MP barrel should be ok. What else from MP is there?

Hi Jacques, thanks for answering.

I'm trying to work out if the T-62M upgrade set that Modelpoint make for the Tamiya T-62 would work on the Trumpy kit.

It's main parts are the extra armour for the front glacis, the turret brow armour, and the KTD laser range finder.

The range finder I can get as a separate part but I was hoping if the hull dimensions weren't too off that I could use the glacis front armour and also the brow armour parts on the trumpy turret. Of course I can always chop up the brow armour and re-jig it to get it to get it to fit the more accurate turret shape if the size isn't too far off.

If its too off I'll have to build the extra armour from plasticard and miliput...

I don't have the MP kit on hand, so I cannot comment on those aspects. I would say that if they made it for the Tamiya kit it will be a bit too big for the Trumpeter kit...maybe, if all sizes are comparable and Tamiya did not have dimension issues as well...and sorry, I do not have a Tamiya T-62 handy to compare. Since MP's stuff is so good, I think you can get away with buying it and modifying it if need be. But don't quote me on it!

Thanks for the feedback Jacques, I know that Chris said on the other T-62 thread that the MP laser range finder replacement mantlet wont fit the trumpy kit. I plan to get the KTD as a separate part and attach myself anyway.

I imagine that I will scratch build the BDD package. I've been thinking about it a lot and while I'd like to work with the MP set (for the experience if nothing else, I'm interested to see the quality of their resin) it's quite expensive. For a set that I would likely have to chop up a lot and rework I'm a little hesitant.

Having said that there is an excellent T-62M build on dishmodels.ru where the guy chopped up a Tamiya T-55 and T-62, changed the 62 parts to 35 scale and pretty much totally reshaped the turret with putty. He used the MP BDD parts and with a little work got a great result.

He also added some extra armour to the turret though that I haven't seen on photos I have and gave the tank an NSVT as the AAMG... I don't know if thats correct I haven't been able to find a photo of a T-62M with an NSVT, but I guess its possible. It's a great build though and very inspiring...

Jon,

I have the Tam T62A and Trump T62 mod 1962.
Tam glacis plate (width x length): 59.2mm x 38.2mm
Trump glacis plate (width x length): 57.9mm x 36.9mm
I have a set of verniers so its no problem to measure other dimensions if you need.

Regards
Len

Thanks Len, much appreciated. I had figured that the difference would have been a lot more, thats interesting to see that the glacis plates are fairly close, only a few mm out in fact.

Obviously the turret shapes are very different but how do they vary in diameter? Is the Tamiya turret a lot bigger?
