Hi all, I have decided to post my build of Trumpeter's KV-1 Ehkranami for all to see. I am planning to build it OOTB and want to focus mostly on the painting and weathering as those seem to be my weakness.

Brandon - Good luck with your build. I'll be following as I'm working on my own KV-1 and plan to many more. By the way, has Trumpeter muffed the name of the vehicle on the box top? My Russian is rusty, but I believe it should be KV-1 s ehkranami ... the "s" meaning "with" in Russian. Definitely not possessive.

Thanks Bill, I will be following your build as well and plan on taking advantage of your building tips to help with my KV....based on your advice I guess I need to seek out a bottle of Yuengling eh?

Trash the rubber band tracks...the plastic ones work real well and look good when finished.

Bill and Brandon, are you aware of www.4bogreen.com....it's a fabulous site for KV info and the two kits that each of you are working on....plus the site owner is a great guy and will answer any questions about the KV or the actual kits.

Greg - I'm definitely aware of 4bogreen.com. In fact, I'm deliberately following his "recipe" as closely as possible. Luckily, for the model I'm making there are that many corrections needed.

Bill, not sure if you have Niel's book, if you don't and can afford the price it's the best reference work on the KV series out there. Niel is currently working on his next book which will be on the IS series.....

Kimmo: I think it's already starting to set in.. I have one on the way, another I'm going to pick up at my local hobby shop, and if I like what I see I'll probably order the rest from the vendors you all have mentioned . I never even knew I liked KV's

They are great kits, I am enjoying building this one and I have the KV-2 in the stash that will get built shortly after this one is done. Best of all they are priced really well, I got mine for around 15$ each.

Jeremy, I got this KV-1 and the captured German KV-2 pictured below at Earlshobbyhangar.com. It looks like they don't have any listed on their site, but you should check it out for other deals, and the five dollar flat shipping is a deal as well. They are based in Utah (where I am) and are great to deal with in person or online.
And now some progress on my KV-1, the only issue I have with the kit so far is it seems almost every piece has a seam line down the middle of the part. It removes easily with a sharp knife but it is slowing down an already slow builder...

Your build is looking great btw. I know those seams are annoying, but take a look at a Zvevda/Eastern Express kit and you'll never worry a little trimming on the Trumpeter kits again
My biggest concern is actually the multi-piece hull, I'm actually dreading that after attempting Zvevda's BT-7 kit....

Great subject and great kit IMO. I really liked building it. Plus the value for money for such a quality kit is downright staggering, although it seems the price is fluctuating a lot these days. I used Armorsacle F32 barrel, although I find the one from the kit isn't bad at all. It came with a severly warped hull though...
The engineering of this kit is quite surprising. Sometimes, absolutely no glue is necessary, the fit is just perfect. Then some other times, it isn't quite so.

Jeremy, the Trumpy KV hulls go together real easy compared to Eastern Express and Zvesda kits.

Thanks Jean, If you read Bill Gormley's KV-1 model 1941 build log he mentions the same issue with the warped hull. Mine was a little off but ended up not being an issue...

Brandon, one thing sticks to my eye on your KV-1 and itīs those idler adjustment mechanismīs beside idler wheel. Are you sure, you got them right, because I think they should point upwards, no downwards.

Gentlemen...regarding the hull warpage, are you talking about the sides of the hull tub being warped inwards in the middle, so that they have to be eased outward in order to fit the engine deck in between the hull sides? If so, I've encountered this on every Trumpeter KV I've built.
I fix the problem by cutting a piece of sprue to the interior width of the hull and gluing it inside the hull tub, a few mm down from the top, to act as a brace and hold the sides of the hull tub out at the proper distance. This ensures that the joint between the top of the hull side and the bolted engine compartment roof plate is consistent in width all the way along.
