Well I think I have finally finished the Leopard for now. It took me awhile to finish it since I was working on some side project and once they were completed, I could then refocus on finishing this model. I still need to add some crew figures to the tank, but I’m holding out for the new release from Black dog’s Canadian crew. But overall I’m happy to finish this build and I would have to give HB an 8 out of 10 for this kit considering all the headaches I encountered along the way and some inaccurate parts in the kit. The addition of the slat armor really sets this kit out and would be nice to see this as a separate kit to add to Tamiya’s Leo. Now onto my next project and slowly cleaning kits from the shelf.

Firstly, stonking good model! Pity about some of the schoolboy errors from HB. Glad someone has finally proved that slat/bar armour can be done in plastic. I think it looks OK here, and would look even better when also in the body colour. Apart from the very high cost of etched AM slat sets, I imagine that building them can lead to insanity unless you're very handy with a soldering iron.
The earlier post about the slat (or bar) armour is pretty much correct: protection against RPGs. It isn't often appreciated that some RPG7 warheads can penetrate over 300mm of armour, especially the tandem warhead types. Fortunately Tommy Taliban seems to have mostly the older, cheaper and less effective types. Still very dangerous for lighter armour, but not fatal to MBTs.
If the RPG detonates on a slat, the stand-off distance prevents the penetrating jet from forming at the correct distance for best penetration. Still a big bang though, with external blast damage. Often the slats just catch the RPG without detonating it. British vehicles frequently arrive back at FOB sprouting live RPGs jammed in the slats (like EOD don't have enough to do!).

BTW, should have said that I've just spotted this kit on eBay from a Chinese seller for £11/$16 + £10/$15 UK shipping: Buy It Now. The seller's name is "dawngrocerystore" (!!!). Sounds like a bargain to me

THANKS CHRIS FOR POSTING THIS BUILD. I HAVE TWO OF THESE KITS AND THEY'RE NEXT ON THE LIST TO BUILD AFTER I FINISH MY CDN. COUGAR. YOU'RE GOING TO SAVE ME LOTS OF TIME AND AGGRAVATION FIXING THE PROBLEMS OF THIS KIT. YOU HAVE DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB ON BOTH THE TANK AND THE BASE. THEY LOOK GREAT. I've seen this on two Canadian peaces now, what is with the upside down water bottles attached to the antenna? easy access?

They are for inserting glow sticks.

ok, not what i was expecting, what are the glow sticks for? Low light "here I am, don't drive into me" lights?

Kind of something like that. Crews use IR Chem sticks that can only be seen under NVG's and thermal imagers. It helps those on the ground and pilots spot their postion during night ops and aids in driving. Hope that helps some. We also did the samething during FARP operations with chem sticks on top of our helmets so the pilots can see where we were on the ground.

I seen this post and thought someone on this wonderful site would know better than me. What German Leopard 2 or a export of that type would be used in ISAF ? I have been trying to find out but no Luck on the web searches I have done.

Hi William,
The Canadian Army used the Leopard C2 (which is a modified Leopard 1A5), the Leopard 2A6M CAN (which is an upgraded Leopard 2A6), and the Leopard 2A4M CAN (which is an upgraded Leopard 2A4) in Afghanistan. All the Canadian tanks left Afghanistan in 2011. Canada also had the Taurus ARV (Leopard 1 based), the ARV 3 (Leopard 2 based), and the Badger AEV (Leopard 1 based) in Afghanistan until 2011.
The Danish Army is using the Leopard 2A5DK (which is a modified Leopard 2A5) in Afghanistan. They also have Leopard 1 based Wisent ARV as well.
The German Army has the Leopard 1 AVLB (Bridgelayer) and Leopard ARVs in Afghanistan but no tanks.
That's all the Leopard 1 and 2 variants that have deployed to Afghanistan that I can think of.

Thank you for the information. I was going crazy trying to find out what to get to model an it be somewhat accurate. I wanted to do something I never did a model of. And to explore new tank designs.

Hi my name is Eduard, Czech Republic. I built the models before. Now I'm coming back. Formerly fighters in 1/48, now AFV 1:35. I like the German school. Family Leopard, Panther, ... Leopard from Canada army are interesting. I have ordered HB model, 30.5. will be at home.
I have a Revell 1/35 2a5 / 5NL number 32043. Isn't it much of a power upgrade / help with HB Canada Leopard, track, Gun L44, ... Would (a little) improve the 2A6M model combination of this Leopard model? Do you have any experience with HB Canada and Revell 2a5 or 2a6 (longer gun). Resin Leopard Club super, for me great price and not for me and my model. Sry my weak English. Eduard.
