Hi Everybody,
Well Ryan (the3rdPlacer) said that he mentioned the M106 im working on within his thread and folks wanted to see it. Here ya go…
Again, this is for the upcoming book in the ArmourData series done by SAM Publications…Ryans M60A1click here , and my M1A1click here and M106 are the models featured. The book will cover other M113 variants in ODS also (and M1 variants too).
The M106 is a combo using Academys hull and Taymia M106 stuff..however in hindsight this isn’t needed as the two hulls are almost identical and the Taymia kit only needs a few minor items to make it a A2 vs the A1. In addition to the scratchbuilt details, im also using Eduards PE sets for the interior and exterior.
Comments welcome!

Looking good. Custom decals for interior I presume.

I don't know what impresses me more, the great build or the awesome transfers. I'll be heading over to Archer's site to order some shortly for my M106 and M113s.

Andy,

Both this M106 and your M1A1 are looking very good.

I realize you are still building, but you appear to be finishing the interior first, so...

The tread-pattern deck plates and the large retainer washers on the deck plates in the M113s and M577s were aluminum and galvanized steel. I would hazard a guess that the M106s were the same, but that's just a guess (images from PrimePortal):

This M106 interior image appears to have some unpainted aluminum deck plates:

This picture of a M106 shows the aluminum deck plate showing through the worn off paint, which I believe was applied by the crew:

Also, the interior engine compartment panels were usually the light green color, as shown in the background of this image of the interior of a M106:

I'm an Engineer and NOT a Mortarman, so I could be wrong about all this. Someone please correct me if I am.

Just trying to help...

Yes the floor plates should be bare metal. I have seen a few M106s where the tread plate on just the turn table was painted. The last 3 pictures you posted are not of a M106. They are of a M1064 120mm.

Dad-gum-it!
I rushed through finding images and didn't notice the "4". But, thank you for pointing this out. I told ya'll I wasn't a Mortarman!

Fantastic.

I'm used to seeing the rear engine panel painted a dark green:

Its coming along nicely. One change though, for an M106A2, you need to change the exhasust stack to the flapper type with the guard around it. You still have an A1 exhaust and engine deck.

A2 engine deck and exhaust.

Hi Gino

Thanks for the heads up. I do have an extra filler cap and was going to replace that...just havent yet. As for the exaust, good picture...my gut told me that I needed to change that, but just didnt have any clear pics on the 106A2 weither that changed or not. Id hate to steal the exhaust from the Academy A2 kit (as I was going to build it up using the taymia hull...do an OIF build)...but that looks easy enough to scratchbuild!

oddly enough paul, I used your images to verify what I was seeing in the Verlinden walkaround book...Dark green.

I think later on they started showing up with light green panels, thus what you see in the M1064 (probally simplified at the factory as all other version of the M113 have light green...)

Now the tread plate is interesting...The verlinden book def shows dark green panels on the M106s in there, but they are A1s (maybe an A2 in some shots)....I may sit the fence, go back in with some dark metalic to get that dark dirty metal look...then under the eventual sand and grime and equipment ill be adding it will blend right in and look right.

Anybody verify the color of the ammo tubes? I just painted them dark grey (taymia instructions say black)...but now im wondering if they should be some other color.

The ammo tubes are paper on top of brown or black wax on top of cardboard:

Even unpainted the floor gets a bit dark as seen in this shot of the inside of a M577 FDC track.
