This is going to be a Q&A thread for a project I am starting. Basically here is what I've got and what I'm thinking of doing. The Kit is the Trumpeter ASLAV I've got Evergreen Plastic, Ken LeClair's Excellent DVD on the LAVIII, Coyote and Bison, I have lots of stowage. What I have decided was that there will be no aftermarket conversion sets as hard as it is I want to try my hand at scratch building all the up armour and detail on the Canadian Coyote. I'm not typically a rivet counter but for this build I'm heading there. So yes Accuracy is an issue for me on this build as long as it within my skills.

My first question would be the approximate thickness of the add on armour? and is the thickness uniform over the whole Coyote?

Any help and encouragement would be appreciated. I will post a build blog in a separate thread.... this thread I want to keep as a reference thread.

I'm not sure about anybody else, but I really don't get the warm fuzzy anouncing over the net armour thicknesses of presently serving kit.

Hello,
You chose a very difficult conversion. Coyote has a different front and rear of the hull. Partly different turret. According to the pictures you make are very difficult to accurately add-on armor. Only similar. You need an accurate drawing. I wish you much patience and look forward to building on the village. Thickness of the add-on armor is approximately 0.5 mm.
Here is link.

Understood, .5mm is approximate enough. Not wanting to get anyone into any trouble.

Miloslav,

Yeah I know the difficulty..... But I do like a challenge.

I don't think the thickness is a big National secret, it's fairly easy to look at photos and approximate it. It's more the composition of the material that would be the big 'no-answer' question. Good luck with your project, looking forward to it.

Jim,

This case the composition will be sheet styrene. I wasn't sure whether to use the .5 mm or the 1 mm styrene and I think the question should have been how thick the sheet styrene would be to use as add on armour. My apologies to all.
It would then be fair to conclude that the thickness would be uniform on the model?

Yep, I was talking about the real thing . I think about .030"/1mm should be close in scale.

Emil, in case you don't know, you don't "have" to build the yote with add on armour. They have deployed to the Balkans and Africa without it. Plus, they were deployed for a short time to Afghanistan without the armour (painted tan).

I'm kind of surprised that Trumpeter has not announced a Coyote in their list of releases. The ASLAV is really quite close; I figured they would milk those sprues to get another LAV-25 variant.

Graeme, Yes I have seen the unarmoured Coyotes which will be another project. I have wanted to try my hand at some scratch building and the armoured version kind of got my fancy. I too am quite surprised that Trumpeter has not made more variants. But they have come a long way.

The Trumpeter Stryker M1126 was my first AFV kit and I had fun building it OOB I followed it up with the Trump LAV-AT so my progression continues.

I have an issue with putting knife to a $70 AFV kit and Trumpeter kits are about half the price details are a bit soft but I can justify cutting it up and having some fun.

$70, yoikes. I get my Stryker fix from Lucky, $18.99 for the TACP version.

AFV Club TACP Styrker

Follow up with Anthony though. I'm pretty sure he has a PDF file of the Coyote add-on-armour template.

Yikes...$70!! Even my prices are no where near that...the 1126 and 1130 are about $46 here. The 1128. 1134, and 1132 are a little more, but the first 2 AFV put out are no where near the $70 range.

Graeme, Scott, Yes That is what I saw the AFV M1126 go for Locally so I passed on it and bought the Trumpeter Stryker instead as it was $35. Then again The Hasegawa 1/48th F-18C is $120 before taxes which is why I haven't bought that kit locally either.

Mind you my armour stash has grown to a grand total of 7 kits

1 Tamiya Leo 2A6
1 Tamiya M1A2 OIF
1 later release Trump M1126 with the added stuff
2 LAV III (1 TUA and 1LAV III)
The ASLAV which is being built
1 AFV M1126 which I got in a trade

I send templates 1/35 scale to Emil.
