so last thursday my local hobby pusher said to me "hey dylan are you interested in a cougar?" I said "sure but i already have one, and she's a really good cook"
It turns out he was talking about a different type of Cougar entirely. the new 1/35 scale kit from Trumpeter
The kit doesn't quite fall together but it comes close. the only headaches were the propeller/rudder arangement and the lousy kit decals. The kit p.e. gave me some grief but i am pretty sure that was my fault.
it was built completely OOB, but i think i might replace the antennae with some stretched sprue.
It was painted with Gunze gloss white and preshaded with dark gull grey. it took over 3 coats of white to cover the preshading, I am sure glad i didnt use anything darker. the lower hull was given a wash of Mig "neutral wash".
the upper hull and turret were given a wash of thinned "paynes grey" artist oils. most of the decals went on ok but one of the UN markings shrivveled up into a little ball. so i used one from my lav3 kit. then i gave the lower hull a liberal overspray of "dust" and carried it up the sides of the hull.
this was my inspiration for the weathering.
here she is in all her glory. comments and helpful criticisim always welcome

For an OOB weekender build you done good!
A few tips....
The photo you posted is of a Cougar in Somalia but I understand your inspiration for the weathering on your UNPROFOR Cougar.
The kit is lacking the tank phone for the left rear door....not your fault if it is not included in the kit.
The thicker part of the barrel should have a dust cover added. This should be an easy addition for you.
Are there no handles for the front engine hatch?
What are the issues with the decals? It looks like you used one of the hull UN decals on the glacis plate.....the font and size of the left and right hull UN decals look different.
Good job on the weathering....nice photos too.

You don't waste any time! Nice job on the UNPROFOR scheme - and for posting the pic which I think is from Somalia?
How well did the suspension go together?

Thanks for the kind words guys
I wasn't able to find too many UNPROFOR cougar pictures so I just used the one from Somalia. like i said it was just for reference as to how the dust settles on the vehicle.
(quote leocmdr)"Are there no handles for the front engine hatch?"
there is one, and a few tie downs
(quote leocmdr)"What are the issues with the decals? It looks like you used one of the hull UN decals on the glacis plate.....the font and size of the left and right hull UN decals look different."
the right side and glacis UN decals are from the kit but when i put the left one in the water it shrivveled up into a ball. so i had to rob one from my Lav3 kit. that was the only decal i had issues with.
Graeme. the suspension went together OK, but you really need to read the instructions carefully a few times. the trumpy assembly sequence is not the best way to do it. I had problems with the halfshafts popping out of place a few times.
thanks again for the nice comments.

Hi Dylan, thanks for the heads up. I had a look at the instructions, and on the last step, they show one side of the tires with the tread facing the wrong way. I think your driver's side front wheel fell victim to that - the rest of the treads are pointing the right way.
Trumpeter really should be commended for this kit - they have come so far in such a short time. I would not be surprised if this kit was re-issued with a sprue to make it a late model (wide tires, tool bins, turret basket, late mirrors, etc). But I am glad they chose a mid, as it allows the FRY and Somali options.
Really looking forward to their Grizzly and Husly kits, and Bison...some day

Granted the directional tread is designed to face v as opposed to ^, there are circumstances where it is reversed, I'd imagine most commonly if the spare was used.

lol I didn't even look at the tread pattern until you mentioned it. anyway it was a quick fix
by the breakdown of the parts there WILL be a late version. the holes for the rudders/guards at the rear of the vehicle are flashed over. and the turred boxes are seperate from the turret so a basket can be added to the later version.
what i dont know about Canadian armour could fill several books. I spent my time in the Air Force drinking coffee and fixing the odd airplane. it's good to know there are a few folks around to answer my questions.

Really nice job, Dylan. Good to see that you're still taking your time to build these. Wow! A whole weekend!
Still waiting for them to show up at the LHS - so I can add it to the pile of unbuilt stuff I already have.

really nice build Dylan, great to see Canadian armour represented in scale models and fun to see your finished efforts. i read somewhere surplus cougars without the turret are being sold to foreign countries... only 3 million dollars each. with a little lotto winnings a guy could get through the snow in style. thanks for sharing, cheers, bd.

In 2008 Uruguay purchased 44 Cougars without the turrets and they were converted into APCs by a company in Chile. In 2009 they bought 98 Grizzlys and 5 Huskys that were being used in Dafur.
They probably paid more like 3 million for all of the vehicles together....there is no way they paid 3 million each....that is the cost of a brand new tank.

Don't think I would change it look at the vehicle in the back ground. Seems that crew did the same thing just on the oppsite side.
I can't belive you did that in a weekend, Great job.

Lucas is correct in his post...the tires could be used on the opposite side as a spare if need be....but the wear on the tire dramatically increased unless it was a for only a short period of time.
A Cougar with UNPROFOR in Bosnia put on a ton of miles during a tour and the tire would have been swapped for the correct side very quickly.

Hi Dylan, lovely looking Couger the white paint job is brilliant and you have nailed it. One question, the UN markings are only for Somalia? Not for Bosnia where you would need SFOR markings?

Hi Martyn. I believe the markings are for a UNPROFOR Cougar. I dont think the vehicles in Somalia actually had "UN" painted on them. but knowing Trumpeters reputation for dodgy research, the kit decals are most likely a mix of both missions markings.

The markings are for an UNPROFOR Bosnia deployed Cougar....the timeline would be between the fall of 1992 and late 1995.
The Canadian mission in Somalia with the Cougars was not a traditional UN mission....the Cougars were painted white originally for a UN mission in Somalia but they did not deploy on the mission as the mandate changed and instead deployed to Somalia as part of UNOSOM. It is a bit confusing but that is why there are no UN markings on the Somalia deployed vehicles and no blue berets or blue helmets. I am sure someone else can explain it better than me.
The kit would need some significant external modifications for it to be a Cougar with SFOR.....it won't be an SFOR Cougar with just the markings.

I've built the kit and you're right the prop/rudder arrangement was annoying. Where do parts B26 go? I can't find them anywhere in the instructions. Also a word of warning to future builders, pay good attention to the placement of parts A34 and A33 because when you go to place parts A13 and A14 (the front A frame suspension) it'll be a bear to fix if you goofed like I did. Other wise the kit goes together pretty good. I noticed that you didn't put the front plate stopper on,( Part A2). I only noticed that because I forgot it too. Still, great job dude. Hope to see more.
