What a cool vehicle. Put a couple machine guns on it and it's good to go.

I've seen another exemplar of this odd monster:
http://www.russianmilitarytrucks.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4565
It seems a train cab mounted on a MAZ 543 (?) frame

I guess 'MAZ 547' it would be. The topic itself: crazy stuff!

I wonder what they use this for? Looks like a mutated camper van or something!

So what was it used for? Was it a Command and Control vehicle or a tractor?

Correct. I picked up several of thse during my excursions into East Berlin way back in the day:
If I find the appropriate tires from a Roco kit I may sacrifice one of them to make one.
If not, I'll do something like this:
Iraq used several different similar locomotives, one of which is closer to the one I have. The registration numbers are even available online.
Gutzold actually makes the locomotive in the photo. It might be worth getting.
