Ola Guys

The title pretty much says it all. Currently still working on my Aerosled and I am looking for pictures of engines. The built instructions tell me to paint it steelcolored but I don't like that. I have seen beautifully painted engines in restoration vehicles. Often in nice shades of green or blue and the occasional red as well. Did the Russians in ww2 give their engines the same threatment? I guess the engines need to be prepped so they would not rust quickly. Or did they not paint their stuff?
I tried searching on Google but not one search really gave me the answers or ideas I was looking for.

Hopefully the answer can be found here in the neverending pool of knowledge that is available here.

See the image of GAZ M-1 engine (inside of GAZ M-1 car engine compartment):

NOTE ! Red colour on this image is the result of photographic lamp lighting !

P.S. Yes, it is too hard to find colour images of this engine !

Hi, Robert
I cannot tell you about Aerosled, never did research on that one, but engines (just like everything else) were painted according to official standards. The main colors usually were the black lacquer M-122 and the base color of an outside camouflage (such as 4-BO or other).
For example:

Usually only civil car engines were painted "shiny":

Ola Eduard and Alex

Thanks for jumping in with your knowledge. I really appreciate it.
@ Alex.
your info is exactly what I was hoping for. Given that the Aerosled uses the Engine of the Gaz M1. I give it a guess that a big portion of those engines come from military versions of that car. So I will go ahead and paint the engine in the colors you showed.
The problem is the Aerosled is such a small vehicle and the color is pretty much white. So I try to add color whereever I can. I spent a lot of time painting the interior in nice woodcolors after I read the vehicle was constructed of Aircraftgrade plywood.
