Hi all,
I'm looking for in service pics (NOT museum photos) of JSU-122 (and possibly JSU-122S).
Can be WW2 or postwar, I'm no WW2 fetishist!
I've been looking in my books but could only find rounded nose vehicles.
Many thanks for your help!
Cheers,
Christophe

Thanks but those pics seem to show the round nose on JSU-122, and some vehicles are not even JSU-122s (JSU-152 and SU-122P).
This is a sharp nose (on a JSU-152).
Cheers,
Christophe

That's a JSU 152 Christophe. The 122mm and 152mm share the same gun mantle while the 122S has a 'rounded front'. Plus John's fourth picture down is a 152, like what you're looking for.
Best way to tell them apart that I've found (I just got my DML JSU 3 'n 1 in the mail yesterday so I've been doing some research);
122 lack of a muzzle break (John's sixth picture)
122S more traditional muzzle break (John's ten/last picture)
152 slotted muzzle break (your picture)
The JSU Wiki is pretty good on explaining the different models aswell. Hope that helps you out.

I just googled ISU-122 , ISU-122S, ISU-122M .. that what I got.
Posted some of the pics.
The last pics is in fact a Su-122, all the others where were there as ISU-122. Not sure about the close-up shot to be 152 oe 122.

Thank you for pointing that out, I thought I already did but this makes it clearer.

Disclaimer for Christophe : I'm no JSU-122/ISU-122 expert !
Red Army ISU-122S in Soběslav, Czechoslovakia (1945 ?). Inscriptions on the SPG read : "We are Russians, we have won" and "Glory to the Soviet artillerymen!"
ISU-122 SPGs in Berlin (I'm not 100 % sure about the nose of this one ) :

I think it's a rounded front on the second photo...
Cheers,

De rien !
Sur l'agrandissement, si tu regardes le coté droit (sur la photo) du "nez" entre les patins de chenilles, le peu d'angle visible a l'air assez "vif"...

You're right I was tricked by the mud and wet patches but upon second look it appears to be a sharp ended front hull.
Thanks!

@Frenchy
you are right the angle is quite sharp, not rounded.
Les chenilles et la boue sur les photos en noir et blanc.. c'est pas facile à voir le format du "nez" de la bête..
Great photos as usual !

Actually, the angle would be the same - 30 degrees. Those "straight noses" started when construction of the front of IS-2 was changed in May-June 1944. The cast "nose" was manufactured by ChKZ, the welded one - by UZTM. Before that the angle was only 16 degrees. The connection of the new "straight" noses" to the front of the superstructure would be also different than of those built before the change. New version had a little horizontal "step" which is relatively small on cast nose, but pretty noticeable on the UZTM version.
Just my "rivet-counting" 5 cents...

Actually according to Neil Stokes both types were cast (no "welded" type), read here :

It's not the first time Neil is mistaken. Does this looks as being cast? Not to me.

I am not sure, but I think there are three noses... soft cast, sharp cast, and welded (sharp). If Neil runs across this thread, comments are welcome.

Guys,
This may be of help. It's Neil Stokes' ISU presentation that he did at AMPS in 2011. Just click on the link above and it should help.
Regards,
Georg
