Lee:

It may just be the photos, but it looks to my old eyes like the turret is noticably "greener" than the hull. Not sure how you can fix this with all the layering you've done in the painting; perhaps it will even out with weathering. I really like the hull color, but that turret is just too green.

I must admit that I have always thought that OD is more a Brown/Green than a Green/ Brown

As for the M4A1 on M-L...yes I would say it is too green for me

Twig, it looks very nice so far. I realize you have a long way to go with the filters and weathering but, I agree with the other's comments on the green so far. But, if the shade of OD green you are looking achieve is close to what you're after, go for it. I don't think more than two of us will agree on any one shade of OD. There is no set shade etched in stone.
Looking forward to seeing more on this finishing.

Lee, I personally do not see anything wrong with the color used on the Sheman from the link to ML. There were so many variations to the color OD that no one shade is correct nor incorrect.
What you have so far looks fine. The only thing you need to try to correct is the two different shades of the turret and the hull. The turret's green looks far too bright. Your hull's color looks good.

Hi, Lee, it is looking really good. The following is just an opinion, but you might try the post shading technique on the hull. I think you would see better results there than on the turret. The hull, to me looks a tad bit dark, but with a slightly lighter post shading I think would look great. I am going to agree on the turret, but I am not a US WWII guy, so I just use the Model Master Bottle that says Olive Drab. :-) I am not the best painter, so I can only offer opinions and thoughts, not actual content here.

Hi Twig,

allthough I'm not an OD expert, I really like this one, especially those fine details that you've added.
Good luck with the painting and weatheringstage.

Greetings,

I won't be a color nazi, but you'll get by better by matching hull and turret as closely as possible, then weathering it down to a duller tonality.
The contruction, of course as befits your demonstrated skills, is excellent.

Gee, Lee, to my eye, the hull looks closer to OD than the turret. I would have just tried to lighten up that color, rather than try to turn it greener.

But, like Ken and others point out, there is really know definitive color of Olive Drab. Sure, there is an FS number for it, but weathering and other factors tend to shift the colors. I'd never paint a Sherman that green, but that's my personal preference. I think you could have left off the interior green and possibly used a middle stone or khaki brown instead.

The thing about OD is that it is really somewhere between green and brown. You make straight green by mixing yellow and blue. I mix OD in oil paints using Ivory Black and Naples Yellow. I add more black to darken and more yellow to lighten -- adding any green to the mix changes it too much.

I'm not sure I like the color of Dr. Ahn's otherwise fabulous model (love those apples!). If you're going to use a model for color reference, I'd instead suggest using any of Steve Zaloga's U.S. vehicles. I'm not too keen on using other models as reference, except maybe for a technique or two to steal.

I don't know if any of this info helps you, Lee, but maybe someone can get something from it. I, too, have a bit of colorblindness for certain shades of green and brown. Model Masters Olive Drab looks right to me, so that's what I always use as my base.

I'm with ya, Lee

That's an awesome model and I'm sure you'll give it a finish to match. I'm glad you took my comments the way they were intended.

Lee,

Wow, you sure are detail oriented. I think Kencelot captured it best. If you do a google search on the Internet, and look at color photos of Shermans, Jeeps, and other WW II US vehicles, you will notice one thing - Olive drab is different from vehicle to vehicle to vehicle. Some OD is very very green, some light, some dark, some almost black, some very brown. At any rate, the model is looking very good, especially the hull. I am also a fan of post shading over pre-shading, although your layering technique appears to have some fascinating results as well. How do you like the airbrush? Keep us posted....

PS Oh yeah, when are we going to see that Tiger wearing some paint?

Looking good, a very interesting Sherman.

The OD looks a little off... Maybe a little faded?
