I am considering trying the SP Designs TOS-1 and have a couple questions:

I have heard they were used in Chechnya, is this true? If true are there any good pictures out there?

What is the quality of the conversion? I know one or two people here have built it, and am interested on hearing their opinions.

Thanks for any help and information given.

1. yes, Tos-1 was used in Chechnya. I cannot confirm which version was used, the TOS-1 or the TOS-1A. The launch boxes are different shapes for the variants. There are pictures of the rocket remains in Chechnya, but not of the launchers shooting, at least not that I have found.

2. SP Designs made 3 kits, based on the time of manufacture. The newest one, as on my SAAMMODELS webpage is the newest and best cast. I have a older casting up on eBay is a 2nd gen casting. They build up nice, but they might be a bit of work...not for a novice resin user anyhow. If you have built a resin conversion or 2, and know how to use super glue, fill seams, and such, it will be fine for you.

Thanks for the info Jacques, I've only done one resin conversion and that was the legend T-62M conversion for the Trump. kit. I enjoyed every bit of it.

Seth the TOS-1 conversion is a really great kit to have. Only thing is, it's meant for the older dragon/ zvezda T-72 model. I've built several kits from SP design and they turned out to be really fine with some TLC. I have the 3rd generation version of the TOS that I got from Jacques and is a much improved copy over some of their older releases. The only real let down of the kit is the front upper hull plate. It's much the same way as the miniarm T-72 conversion in that you have to remove a large portion of the fron hull to add the new part.

Here is one that is supose to from Chechnya

Here is a picture of the parts for the TOS from Jacques, notice the upper hull plate

Also a side note, SP uses some rather large casting blocks at the base of the parts or some parts are cast flat and clean take a bit more time than legend's parts. Alot of test fitting and careful sanding is needed.

Thanks for all the information and pics. I think I will definitely look at getting one when I get the chance.

My friend at TBS Model from China told me that he is preparing to launch a new conversion for TOS-1A, the one with 20 launche tubes, for mid-October
he switched to pressure casting from TOS-1A conversion so he said there will be minimal air bubbles to fill compare to the last T-72M4CZ
Also the conversion will have position for travel mode and also for firing mode, the conversion will included PE frets
He send me no pictures yet, he said he would when they are ready
