Hi guys.
I'm just wondering which kit is better, the Zvezda ZIS-151 or the Trumpeter ZIL-157. Which has better detail and fit of parts. Also, are there anymore Soviet truck kits of this era I could go for.
Thanks
Euan

Hi,
I just can say what i think about the Zis-151 from zvezda because I haven't buildt the trumpeter Zil-157 yet.
The zvzeda kit i buildt was from a very outworn mold. That was very annoying because of the filigree radiator grill. Maybe the form was redone since thenbut I don't know. the other thing I remeber are the very strange looking tyres.the genral detailling of the kit is not grat but okay. I think there are aftermarket parts for the tyres, the radiator grill and also very inportnatn for the light guards ( which are also strange looking and much too thick).

Hi
AFAIK Zvezda's Zis-151 is just a rebox of the "old" Italeri kit.
Trumpeter's kit is more recent. Here's a review of the latter on PMMS :
http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/trumpeter/tr01001-3.htm
A GAZ-66 truck has been released under various label : Scale, Eastern Express, Revell...
Several variants were/are available, including one fitted with a ZU-23-2 AA gun.
You can also find several boxings of the URAL 4320 (ICM, Revell...)
If you're not on a budget, Miniman has released a resin KrAZ 255B :

If you want to go back further Ark does a Zis-5 as a BZ-39 fuel tanker, and Alan does a Zis-6 with a BM-13. Zvezda also does the GAZ AAA and the GAZ MM. I don't know how long they were used, but I don't imagine they suddenly disappeared after 1945. Bronco also does a GAZ 69, which is a hell of a nice kit, and in the era you're looking for.
Trumpeter's KZKT53L is a nice kit as well.
I have four of the GAZ-66's - they need work to say the least.
There was a resin UAZ 452 out there too. Don't know if you're into that or not.

Thanks so much fro your replies. I am grateful. I have been trying to get a GAZ-66 for ages but can never seem to find one. I will probably go for the ZIL-157 after reading that review.
Thanks again for your input

i have over the years built all these kits and you will have to look hard to beat the trumpeter zil 157,it is a well detailed and very busy build especially the chassis/running gear and has a superb engine in there too ,you can pick them up pretty cheap as well but be sure to get the russian version as there are a few differences as noted on Frenchys attatchment
i would go full hog on this and get the sam transport version as they were one of trumpeters flagship models ,you can pick these up nice and cheap now.

I first built the 151 as a Katyusha Launcher when I was 14. It is easier to build if you can find an older boxing. The 157 is a more complex kit, but it is beautiful.

Hi Euan,
Club is on 17th. I'm pretty sure I have a Zvezda Zis-151 , if I can find it I'll bring it along so you can have a look at it.

One more soviet truck in 1/35, worth mentioning, is Roden's KrAZ 214:

Hi Euan!
If you have a choice between Zvezda and Trumpeter I must say Zvezda is a scrap. But if you want to build true ZIS/ZiL-151 or 151A, not 157 you may buy Hobby Planet update sets.
tis is producer's site
CLICK
you may ask him directly about his overseas dealers
