KV-122 was a Prototype, IS-2 turret (122mm Gun) mounted on a KV-1 Hull, and never saw active service I think (not sure), maybe even only 1 or 2 ever made,(not sure)
The KV-122 looks very much like the early IS-2, because the early IS-2's are infact IS-1's (rebuilt as IS-2's) and have a distinct step in the front hull at the drivers vision port area, very much like the KV series.
All the IS-1's (100mm Gun),about 100 in total, were rebuilt as IS-2's, and might also have never seen active service as IS-1's, 100mm gun (not sure), they gained the 122mm Gun but retained the distinct front hull step (like the KV-1 series).
Later IS-2's had this 'hull step' smoothed out with a new front casting, this gave the front a clean angle in the drivers vision port area, they were simply removing a weak spot, and this is what you see in Mauro's pictures.

Like you said, KV-122 is on KV hull when IS-1 is on a, well,... IS hull.

IS-1 had the same 85mm gun as the KV-85 but, as said above, a new hull that won't change for IS-2.
IS had 3 different "noses" :
- vision hatch (the hatch is similar or even the same than KV but not fitted on a flat armour plate as KV)
-vision slit, welded
-vision slit, cast
Trumpeter is releasing prototypes now... Are they following the DML's way with each and every sub-variant of a model ?

It's the latest 'trend' (lol) spilling over from the German armour market, which is now rife with paper panzers, Trumpy are just maybe cashing in on that trend.
Give it a year and we'll be getting turrets with guns that can't even be reloaded, lol

I am totally Ok with this. A KV-122 or KV-3 or T29 or darned near anything that isn't a Tiger 1 mid production June 7th-June 11th batch with specific modified exhaust shrouds as seen on the 3 tanks of the 3rd SS Division before they had breakfast on Sept 3rd is totally OK with me. . .
