Hi All,
Can anyone tell me what the red and white blocks in this pic were used for?

Also is the cylinder under the cover behind them an oilcan or similar?
Thanks,
Andy

My guess is air recognition or convoy purposes. I've never noticed those before on NVA 55's. I just looked at the pics I took at Munster last summer and both 55's there have them.

Andy,
There is a East German T-55 at the Base Borden Military Museum that I had the honer of working on and, it also has these items. They were stored in the same location as the deep wadding gear. They also had a long rope attached to them, through a hole drilled in the center of each one. The tank was in as-delivered condition, so nothing was moved around when it arrived in Canada. My guess is they be a signal/marker for when the tank is submerged.
Just spit-balling though. I will be watching the responses to get the real answer.
