Okay I came across a built up model of the Grizzly that is suppose to be during the first gulf war in 1991. Did any of these really get used during the war? I have not been able to find any photos of them and thought I read somewhere that they were only used for airfield security. Can anybody shed on light on this.

To my knowledge no Canadian vehicles were used in the first Gulf War. Grizzlies were mostly used in Canada for training, if I remember correctly none have served outside of Canada. The Cougar's served in Bosnia, but that is about it.

Yes, 100% the Grizzly was deployed to the Gulf War.

Jim Carswell did a great job on that diorama!

The Grizzly served in Cyprus, the Gulf, Bosnia, and Kosovo...as well as the Oka Crisis in Quebec.

Jason

Thanks for the education, I did not think any Grizzlies served overseas. I guess I have learned my lesson for the day.

Thanks

My pleasure...but...the Grizzlies used in the Gulf War were the early (origianl) version. What that means is the turret needs to be backdated to the original version and this includes changing the gunner's main and adding the AA sight as well as adding the front vision block on the turret. You would also have to add the turret wire cutter and change the GPMG to the older C5.

Here's a couple photos that inspired my diorama. From the book 'Desert Cats, the Canadian Fighter Squadron in the Gulf War' by David Deere, 1991, Fortress Publications ISBN-0-919195-13-X, for discussion only:

Some pics of my Grizz - no kit back then!:

Jason covered the history quite well. This would have been the Van Doos providing airfield security at Doha, Qatar in 1991.

Holy Crap Jim,

As someone who has tinkered I gotta say that is one hell of a build. Good on you, I never saw the build pics.

Best Regards,

Mark

an for all the info, will come in handy once I start the build.

Jim outstanding work, very inspiring. I always wondered who built the dio, just found it by mistake one day surfing the net. How long ago did you build the model?

Wow this is cool.

I never realized that any Canadian forces were deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1991.

Don't even get me started on that topic...Haha! There was a paper plan to deploy a Canadian Battlegroup to the Gulf as part of the coalition forces. It was called Operation "Broadsword"...it never materlized due to a number of issues including the public concern about mass casualties, outdated equipment, and a severe lack of logistics to transport the equipment to the Gulf.

Contingencies were looked at to equip the armoured troops with U.S. M1A1s instead of the Leopard C1 to go to the Gulf. This would have been a very easy transition and my unit was issued a 30 day warning order to train on the Abrams if the green light was given.

Of course none of this happened and the deployed ground troops were limited to guarding a field hospital and Iraqi POWs.

If we'd sent the battle group, then how would we have quelled the Oka Crisis?

Even our F-18's showed up for the Gulf War. I think one of them fired a sidewinder at a speed boat.
