Guys,
can this kit be used to build an M4A3E8 used by the Strathcona Horse in Korea? Aside from getting T-80 tracks for it, am I good OOB? Our club did a model display 2 weeks ago and I met a gent who was a tank Cdr with A Squadron. Missed getting his name, but we discussed a lot of his time he spent there, and thought I'd like to build one of these so I can display it next time.
TIA
Brad

The Tasca "Korean War" Sherman M4A3E8 comes with the T-80 tracks. Indeed, Tasca makes 2 more versions of the M4A3E8 with the T-66 and T-84 track options too.

YUP!!! All we need from ASUKA/TASCA now, are the various US M4 VVSS Early, Mid and Late Production tanks, M4(105mm Howitzer) VVSS, M4A3(75mm) VVSS Early Production with the 56-degree upper hull, and M4A2 VVSS, plus a few more British and Commonwealth versions added to their already GREAT M4-series kits!!! Be nice to get some "state-of-the-art" M3/M3A1/M8 HMC(75mm Howitzer) kits, as well...

So, aside from new tanks that you want, does anyone actually know if either of the 3 M4A3E8 kits from Tasca is suitable for a Lord Strathcona Horse tank in Korea?

Hi Brad,
The Korea war one is your best bet as the M4A3E8's used by the Lord Strathcona's where from US stocks and differ from the Easy 8 kit not only tracks are different but there are some other fitting missing, not sure if the kit has it or if it was offered as a seperate sprue on the Koren War kit but you will need the First aid kit that is mounted on the Drivers side of the hull.
Regards,
Rod

From my research on this the Korean War kit 35-023 is the one you want. Ads indicated elsewhere in this thread the Shemrans used by the Canadians were from US stock and differed from WW2 variants in having the Torsion Bar hinges for the engine access doors, First aid and Tank telephone boxes in addition to a few other minor fittings and covers etc.
The Tasca kit faithfully represents all of these and using the Bison Decals will give you a good Strathconas Sherman

It figures. I bought the wrong kit from my LHS. They didn't have 023 so I bought 020. Oh well, I guess I need to add a few details to it. Some of the photos I've see don't show the first aid kit. Where is the external phone located, I can scratch build that, and I am sourcing the Bison decals.
Thanks for the reply

I believe that the post-war (Korean war) Shermans used by the Canadians were M4A2E8s, not M4A3E8s

No, that is not correct.
In Korea the Strathcona's went there with 17pdr Achillies SP ATs. The Americans wanted to standardise on US equipment and we were issued M4A3E8s for the duration.
_After_ the Korean War Canada bought M4A2E8s and standardised on those and we got rid of the remaining Rams, Grizzlies and whathaveyou that we had retained after WW II. The Korean war tanks never came back to Canada, being returned to the US Army stocks in Korea.

D'oh, that kind of information is what I was hoping to learn with the Service Pub. The Post-war Sherman in Canadian Service but somehow I glossed over that part-pity as I had an M4A3E8 I could have used to model one of those. Unfortunately, I have traded away that booklet and so cannot refer to it.
Anyway, since you are responding to postings, do you know whereabouts in the Rhineland campaign the Ram Badger was mostly used?

Brad,
Are you trying to get it done by the IPMS Vancouver show?...I'll have my version of "Bacchus" there, and you can see how I did mine.
I used the Tasca "Korean War" M4A3E8 as it has the right track, and a fair bit of reference that I got off the internet and regimental histories.
Which tank are you building?, some are much better documented than others.
Cheers,
P

Hi Peter,
We are participating in a Rememberance Day display at one of our local Armories over the 10/11 Nov weekend. I met a gent who said he was with A Squadron. Not sure which tank I am actually doing. I now have the Korean War kit from Tasca and picked up the T-80 DS tracks. They are longer than the kit tracks, but I am finding that the kit tracks bow/curve inward when applied over the drive sprocket, so I am using the DS tracks, which need to be shortened by a couple of links. Markings I got from various Archer sheets. Having fun
Cheers

Paul, the Korean M4A2 HVSS were actually purchased from Cancelled USSR Lend Lease production at bargain prices shortly after WW2 and not Korea
Cheers
