coooollll. I almost bought a conversion for one of these last week. I am in for at least one kit.
how come they call it a flamethrower? when it is a rocket launcher, are the rockets filled with napalm or similar?
good on trumpeter for doing all these kits

They look different to me, the one in this thread sits on the turret roof wwhilst the one in the other thread sits flush on the hull.

There are two versions of rocket launchers mounted on the T-72 hull : TOS-1 (Russian: ТОС-1 - тяжёлая огнемётная система «tyazhelaya ognemetnaya system»), that means in English something like: flamethrower/ incendiary rocket launcher vehicle system. I guess that Trumpeter translated it directly, thus the "flamethrower" defintion.
The TOS-1 (that's the one known as Buratino, a russian character very alike to Pinocchio) carries 30 rocket launcher barrels, while the TOS-1A (AKA Solntsepyok) carries 24 barrels in a different configuration, and is supposed to launch rockets with thermobaric combat heads.

As some have discussed,, it is a thermobaric weapon designed to produce massive over pressure and limited fragmentation effects. This is very similar to fuel air mixture weapons our FAE, fuel air explosives.
They are particularly useful for clearing buildings and bunker complexes as the overpressure moves through the apartment complex for example where as fragmentation and blast weapons are limited to the detonation area.
They have a portable system called the RPO Schmell, with its bubble bee I think,, and is also called a flame thrower despite being more like an RPG weapon.
Hope that helps

No.
The 1K17 Szhatie is a laser-projectors vehicle developed on a MSTA-S hull -look at the running wheels and you can see the difference-.
The TOS versions use a T-72 hull.

Hi Everybody;
Both vehicles are MLRS which launce Rockets, the Warheads can be a either Thermobaric or HE.
SP Design did the early vehicle and JD did a Fantastic build of it a number of years ago, it was all resin and used the lower hull of the Tamiya kit.
TBS also makes a full kit of the Mk;2 version which is quite nice, but a Lil Pricey as its all resin also.
The vehicles can be seen with either the Hull that was Modified just for it or with the normal T-72 hull, and with either the six or the eight spoke wheels or mixed with both.
CHEERS; MIKE.

I've seen it reported online that Putin intends to export TOS-1s to Syria. Take it with a grain of salt.
