I didnt reseach this fully but could this be a colaberation between Meng and Takom? The Leopard looks suspiciously like the Meng kit and Takom molded the MEXAS? Hence the different color of plastic? I might be totally wrong but just curious. I just bought this kit on ebay. I love the look of the tank.
The figure is kinda strange. It looks like an afterthought. Not even an Afghani would be dumb enough to go and shake his fist at a Leopard with nothing but an AK. lol
An armed Afghani shaking his fist in the open doesnt survive too long.

The Afghanistan figure is holding a cell phone. He is a member of a local afghan national army soldier who was working with USSF and the Canadian Leopards . And trust me as a former Leopard commander who commanded a few of these beasts there had more than a fist raised in my direction.....

.
The lower hull is definitely not the same as in the Meng kit. Everything is molded on in the Takom kit. I'll have to dig out the Meng Leo tonight and compare.

I was able to compare the two kits more and there are a lot of differences. The wheels are slightly different in details but both have the non-detailed back of the wheels. The Takom bottom hull has molded on detail and the rear hull plate is molded to the hull. The upper hulls are also different. Details are similar, but there are differences. I tried swapping hull tops to see...they fit very well except the front glacis plates. Turrets are different for obvious reasons and not worth comparing. My guess is if anything, they shared blue prints or some of the basic design process, but the molds are not the same.
EDIT: also, Takom has the periscopes molded to the hull in green. Meng has separate periscopes

Which one would make a better starting point for a leopard 1A5 hull?

I actually couldn't tell you- I am not a Leo expert. The Takom MEXAS kit looks like it has just enough to make the Mexas- no extra front fenders or anything that would be covered by the Mexas armor.

Technically neither since the early engine exhaust grills for the 1A5 are not included in either kit. As well the Takom kit does not include any of the hull side pioneer tools, side skirts, or the grouser racks.

Are there no A5s with the later exhaust grills without the vertical bars?

If it was a fourth batch upgrade of the original Leopard 1A1A1-A1A3 it would have the horizontal grills. I am not sure how rare they were.
Why don't you just get the Italeri Leo 1A5 kit for the hull? Both type of grills are included.

I was hoping to use just one plastic kit, and not use a solid resin turret replacement. So since the turret core of the Tokem kit seem to be the right shape, where as those of the Italeri is too sharp where the turret side meets the turret roof, I thought I will start with the Tokem kit, and add the turret aprons from Perfect scale.
But that looks like it will be difficult.
Hopefully Meng leverage the work already done for their 1A3 and 1A4 and release a 1A5 in the next year or so.
Also I am hoping the later kits would have better detail and accuracy compared to the 20 year old Italeri kit.

Both Meng and Takom have a long way to go if they want to produce an accurate Leopard 1.

Mine just arrived today. The studs for the regular 1A5 turret are not in the kit unless they are the same as the MEXAS mounts, of which there are 8 total. The kit comes with the basic turret sprue which has turret top and bottom, mantlet, cover, hatches and gun.
The studs under the forward mexas module appear to be the same as those on the regular 1A5. But I guess there are not enough studs provided for the whole turret?
There should be 5 big studs and around 14 smaller studs on each side on the 1a5 turret if you remove all the apron panels.

The basic add-on armour mounts are there but additional adapters were added to the mounts in order to fit the MEXAS modules. That is what the TAKOM kit represents. You can see the difference between the standard add-on armour stud-like mounts and the MEXAS plate-like mounts.
You could always cast more if you needed them for the entire turret...but there are two different sizes with slightly different shapes on the actual tanks. The PSM turrets have the correct number but the shapes and placements are a bit off.

Afghans had nothing to fear if they shook their fists....Had one Taliban run out in front of me and open up with an AK, while I was in my Leo2A6 during a river run.
He wasn't so lucky.

Can you tell me how many track links were required per side? I'm building one right now and have managed to break three of the links removing the from the sprue - they are very delicate. I hope I will still have enough, but was wondering if you could tell me?

Why don't you just build the tracks long enough to go around the drive sprocket and the idler wheel to the point where they disappear behind the MEXAS at the front and the side skirt at the rear?
It will save you having to build the entire length of tracks.
