Hi Guys-
With my IV H on the back burner now while I figure out the dio, I was able to make some progress on my M-10. I have painted it up (except for the details), and added a mud slurry to the tracks and such. This particular M-10 is gonna go in my cover up dio - and will be driving through an orchard (muddy one :-) ) so I tried to add some forest litter to the mud effect. Let me know what you think.... does it need more?
This is my first real try at adding mud to a vehicle, so I was sorta timid at first. I'm just looking for opinions on the effect - should I leave it as is - or add more goop?
Any other tidbits of wisdom from the peanut gallery would also be especially appreciated - thanks a bunch fellas!!!
Nelson

N/S!
You call this a little muddied up? geez! This is looking great! the mud looked very real and convincing. I am sure you are not done with the weathering, so I will wait till you finished all.
But this is solid good modeling stuff!
Congratulations! N/T

Good,
Now above the level of THAT mud, take an old brush, with a lighter (slightly) color and splash more there. That will give it a graduated effect ,heavy down low,and ighter as gravity keeps the worst away.

Jeff,
it is looking very good. What colour did you paint the bed rolls and things?

Great Job JN.
same here JN
But back to model I am fixing to start one The Academy one also.
So any hangs on the build?
Did you use the Eduard Pe set have it on hand ready to go plus the Barrel from Barrel Depot.
How about the shells did you try the Brass ones for interior?
Okay what tracks thinking of the AFV club tracks.
Sorry for all thequestions but entering the June 7 IMPS meet with theme is M-10's this year
Let us know JN
Only thing I should point out is but as you are not done is barrel end needs a little mig Smoke on it!
Great job nice build!! (:-) (:-)
One more thing the tools did you have any problems with them heard that the location marks sucked and should not have been put on the model!
Have you seen this site for tools for Shermans http://www.formationsmodels.com/index.html

Nice work JR ! Looks like this M10 kit built up really well. I do like your mud effect. I have one suggestion: be sure to include a few crew footprints where they would mount the vehicle. Your pioneer tools look great, and our OD paint job looks real good.
As always, keep sending us more pics !
Cheers !!

Well done, the mud looks very convincing but as said by TankCarl I would add a slightly lighter colour of dust/pastel directly above the mud to simulate stuff that has dried to give a nice colour graduation.
Can I ask what sort of tracks you have used here?
Lee

Thanks again for the comments guys...
I will indeed go back and add some lighter colored "mud" above the current mud-line to create a more layered effect.. Very good suggestions Carl and Lee..
Airwarrior - the mud was made using white glue, water and ashtray sand. I also added mint flakes and some of my own hair... hehe I just added a dollop of glue in a cup, thinned it out with water, then mixed in the sand, mint flakes, and hair clippings.... slopped it all on with a brush and painted it.
Lee- The tracks are the T-51 set made by RHPS. Very nice tracks and easy to work with... however, they are considerably wider than the Academy sprockets. I had already glued the sprockets together by the time I figured this out, so I had to go back and thin each link by hand..... ouch. This could easily have been avoided had I added a simple spacer between the sprocket halves :-) Live and learn i guess...
Later-
Jeff

Doh!
I knew I missed something.
On the headlight guard "arm" that goes straight back, add small pieces of round stock,to simulate the holder for the headlight contact cover.Any decent picture of the front of a Sherman style hull shows these.

If you've ever seen equipment in a muddy orchard, you will note that the area around the wheels or tracks is coated about the way you have shown.
I think you have shown just the right amount of mud for heavy equipment in a sloppy orchard.
Maybe a smattering of leaves or sticks would finish it off.
Good job!
