Here's one of my current projects, a Tamiya M51 converted to a vehicle in Chilean service in the 1980's.

This utilized the Legends Productions 1973 update, Greg Buechler's Chilean conversion, an RB .30 barrel, and some spares from Tasca. I'm using the Dragon DS tracks instead of the Tamiya kit's tracks, and the decals are from Bison. I've got 2 figures that are Verlinden with Hornet heads.

I'm pushing for this to be ready for the 2015 Atlanta AMPS show next month.

Hey Jesse

Outstanding build!!! It's Kool to see Greg Buechler's Chilean conversion in action. Can I assume your going to tackle the Chilean 3-tone camo here, that would be sweet to see. Keep us posted!

Thanks Eric. Yup, 3 tone and decals are now done. It looks pretty mean. These are a bit older photos, but they're the last set I took.

Nice work...I have all of Greg's conversion kits as well for 2 different builds/modifications of the Chilean Sherman (along with an extra 60mm gun from Greg to do a Chilean M24 and also to do a Chilean M41). All I have to do is find the time! Enjoy the pics just in case more reference is needed!

Nice work Jesse. An interesting version we don't see enough of!

I built one of these last year but scratchbuilt the rear deck...

There are some completed pics here if you are interested - (3rd one down) http://www.plasticarmour.com/gary_boxall.html

It was also featured in the Oct 14 issue of SMMI.

The exhaust heat shield was the trickiest part of the build as I wanted to represent the one shown in John's post. I had to individually drill out the holes in a piece of sheet brass as I couldn't find any suitable PE Would be nice if that option was produced commercially!!

Look forward to seeing more images of yours

@ Gary: Thanks for checking in. I remember when you first posted your conversion. Very impressive.

@ Dave: It will definitely be there. Getting excited about the show.

@ Colin: I'll try to shoot a few photos this evening and see if I can get them posted up.

I notice the barrel is turned metal...which the Tamiya kit does not have (and the kit I'll be using for my Chilean conversion). Where, or from what manufacturer, was your barrel substitute used or based upon??

Too bad you were not aware of Greg's conversion kit for this beast...it includes the PE exhaust you once seeked. Just think of the time you could have saved!

Damn nice build by the way!

The exhaust in Greg's conversion is resin, not PE. At least in the one I bought.

Here she is much closer to completion.

Yea, my bad...I was thinking of another exhaust in PE. You're right...Greg's is resin, not PE, but still a very finely detailed exhaust nonetheless!

And what about your barrel? Brass? And from where??

Kit barrel and muzzle brake. Nothing wrong with either.

Gary's seems to be brass tubing for the main length.

Gotta get Gary to admit what he used if its truely brass. Although the kit does provide good molding for the barrel, I'm kinda spoiled in the brass/aluminum equipped kits now that provide greater detail and precision. I guess the aftermarket bug has bit me when it comes to barrels!

Again...nice work on your Sherman. I've saved all the pics here for my file of "Chilean Shermans to do list". I've started to collect material such as PE, kits, and metal tracks to outfit a Chilean M-24 and M-41 as well.

Nice work indeed on the camo Jesse and the figures are the perfect accompaniment

John - fully aware of the conversion kit - I did have one but decided against using it. As Jesse says, no PE exhaust cover in that set.
The barrel is brass tube - nothing special

Measure the kit piece. It's accurate.

John

Sorry, can't recall the size - I just measured the kit part and found the relevant size in my stash.
TBH, there is nothing wrong with the kit barrel and it is a lot easier using that - I just like making things harder than they need to be
