I was just on Dragon's site, and under announcements there was a 1/35 scale M48A1 coming under their Smart Kit line with a release date of April 2015. Great news for those who have been waiting on this, and it's not from the Black Plague line!

Hopefully they will not try to put the M103A1 kit engine deck part onto the M48 hull, as the result could be horrible...

actual product may not be exactly as shown

I certainly hope it won't be exactly as shown on those CAD images, because it looks like they DID MANAGE to put the M103A1 engine deck (with its much too tall side walls, too flat shape, wrong double-bent rear plate and missing details, not to mention wrong length) on the M48 hull...

Even the tool tray on the fender looks like the caricature included in the M103A1 kit.

Come on Pawel, do i actually hear you giving Dragon the benefit of the doubt? You know and I know exactly what they're going to do... and it's going to be awful

I'm sure i'll get ripped for this by the OOB guys, but judging by the CAD a few bad things are readily apparent. 1)They forgot the track tension idler that sits between the sprocket and the #6 road wheel. It was eliminated on the M48A2C IIRC. 2)The top surface of the engine compartment side walls should be almost flush with the fenders. 3)The rear wall should be a flat surface with no bends above the transmission access plates. Clearly Dragon is going to either use the existing M103A1 sprue or the CAD of it as a basis for new, but still incorrect parts. Dollars to donuts what we'll get is a new sprue with engine deck parts, a new cupola hatch, and new fenders and fittings. And i highly doubt they'll include a Crouse-Hinds searchlight, which would be appropriate for an A1.

-Maybe now that AFV Club is done tooling up the M60xx series, they can resume the M48 that stalled a few years ago.

A moment ago I sent an email to my DML contact offering my help in correcting this mess... Hopefully they will accept it.

Go Pawel, Go! If this is similar as the M103 mess we're sure in for a heap of trouble.

Accepting help would be an acknowledgement of error my friend. Judging by their past history, I have little hope they'll listen to reason.

No, they'll save their money and count on the folks who won't care about the errors. If i had an inkling that it would be of help I'd send my measurements and photos. Oh wait, I did those for someone else.

I have completely lost faith in Dragon... How hard is it to make a semi-accurate kit these days?? I understand sharing sprues cuts down on costs, but sharing sprues that Dragon must know by this point are completely inaccurate? They're ruining their reputation for the sake of saving a few bucks...

Do you people realize how arrogant and out of touch you all sound?
As if you all had a stake in the outcome!
Imagine them accepting "help" from such a condescending bunch.
If you don't like it, don't buy it, for cryin' out loud!!

And if you don't like what's being said, don't read it. Everyone's entitled to an opinion and more than a few of us have been burned by Dragon with kits that don't live up to the prodigious hype they create.

Oh, gimme a break! An educated consumer is the best customer. As I said, if you don't like it don't buy it. Go build AFV Club or Bronco or Hobby Boss--there's enough there to keep you occupied.

I have no clue what your argument is, but you're not passive-aggressively going about it very well. I build pattons. I consider myself a subject matter expert on them. I see a kit that's rife with inaccuracies, therefore I "inform the consumer" about them. Now where's that "hide user" button?

DML just made a sale--I'm buying that M48A1 as soon as it's out. They need all the help they can get against the "experts."

Toot your own horn much? I'm still waiting for your point. All you've done thus far is call me arrogant and out of touch, while defending the shoddy practices of a repeat offender. I've made my points, feel free to retort.

Peter this isn't about your skills. Judging is done by the quality of your work not by the accuracy of the manufacturers kit.The people here are still plagued the M103 which was a disaster in accuracy compared to some of Dragons earlier vehicles like the Tiger/Panther series. When you spend good money on a boxed kit you expect the accuracy to approximate earlier kits but this has been a problem lately and some modelers are getting gun shy.

Hmmm... As Pawel and I are the only ones who offered any help I must be one of the condescending ones of which you speak. I seem to recall going out of my way to help you out a few months back.
As for the companies accepting help or not, well... When they do, EVERYONE benefits. Even you.

And you please be sure to check the lists of technical advisors in Dragon kits instructions for my name. You'll find it in quite a few. But, yeah sure, I'm just a "condescending bunch", so why should they listen...

Back to the scheduled program: I just received an email from DRAGON with many CAD drawings for review. So there is still a hope this kit won't be as bad as those CAD pics above suggest if they only choose to implement the changes I'm going to suggest.

How come no who-ha about the Revell m48a2 recently released?
Looks like a nice US version can be made from that too

It's only my opinion but the Revell kit is an outlier, just kind of "meh". It's dimensionally correct for the most part but i've had my hands on it and the detail quality and moldings are just above Tamiya's 30+ year old offering, and far below what Dragon gave us with the M48A3s. It can still be made into a very good replica, but OOB it's a bit toylike for my taste.

I don't suppose you could get them to fix those awful roadwheels, could you?
