Hi Folks. Well I have just removed the masking tape from the 3 color camo on my aussie Chev. I have a lot of touching up to do as I did have some bleeding in places. This will not be a worry as most of these camo jobs were sprayed and then a 4 inch brush was used to give it hard edges. So I can duplicate this. I have left the engine bay the original green.
Paint is ......green - Tamiya XF58 enamel
light stone - humbrol 121
matt black - humbrol 33
so still the washes gloss coat and decals then a matt coat and weathering to go. The bonnet is just sitting there and the wheel rims need to be cammo'ed yet as well.
Comments welcomed.

Hey Cliff,
Nice masking job bud, the final effect should be quite stunning.
Take care.

Looks great Cliff. One question. Would the inside of the engine bay be the green from the camo? I would have thought that the truck would have been painted a primer, or base coat, and then with the engine doors closed it would have been painted whatever color it was going to be painted. Does that make sense?
This is certainly an interesting vehicle you're doing. Good on yer.

Another unusual subject, I know that you haven't started the weathering yet, my 2 cents is that perhaps the rear tarp could be faded quite a bit more than the rest of the vehicle.... Apart from that comment, I like the subject a lot. Always nice to see commonwealth subjects....Jim

The base paint was the green in the camo. They just slopped the light stone and black over it.

where did it serve
this is one of 7 types of 2 & 3 type cammo's which were used in Australia itself at the time of the expected Japanese invasion in 1942/43. This truck was stationed in the northern parts of Australia. some of the Southern trucks had brick Red instead of light stone. Also the color flutuated between areas as all paint was sourced from local suppiers, some was sprayed with brushed edges and others were just brushed on. So a few different camo jobs are on the cards.
I can do these as I have a copy of the original orders, including diagrams, of how to do it.

Looks real nice Cliff. To keep in place with the forum..Would'nt the driver have a tough time driving with a camo windshield? I would think they would at least give him a vision port! #:-)

they used to oil the windscreen on trucks where the windscreen opened and cover it with sand (not silica) leaving just a small circle clear for the driver to see. This was to prevent glare.

Looks very good MrRoo :-) I like that camo paint job - that is one thing you don't see everyday on trucks - camo..... I like it!
Just out of curiousity - do you have a pic of the truck (a reference?) That would be neat to see..
Later-
Jeff

Lord Roo,
I am glad that you mentioned this in the chat. or else I would have missed this. This is really awesome. How you did the camo, free hand or with masking, if so, with what kind of masking.
This is really interesting. I like it a lot.

Dave as this was my first go at hard edged camo I used a mix of Tamiya 6mm tape and Tamiya 40mm polycarbonate tape. I base painted the model green (tamiya olive green enamel) and then masked the areas that would remain green. sprayed the second color, in this case light stone. Once dry I then masked off the areas that had to be light tan and sprayed the black. Once this was barely dry I removed all masking tape. I did get a little bit of bleeding, mainly under the polycarbonate 40mm tape and have to do some touch ups. I will say that next time I will do it free hand.
Thank you all for your comments
