Any idea if these are water soluble or enamel based?

The $64 question is: are they as good as or better than Alclad?

We'll obviously have to wait until release to find out.

Indeed.
It's maybe a little hard to read what it says on the photos included with the story. Regarding the paint base it says:

To achieve these results, pigments are carried in a resin/solvent base which gives this product its characteristic look and the possibility of achieving a mirror effect.
That isn't very conclusive, but it sounds pretty much like it's not a water based acrylic at least. It may perhaps be a solvent based acrylic perhaps a bit like what's inside an aerosol can of automotive paint. It does also point out that you should wear a vapour mask.

I'm intrigued because Alclad paints are very expensive and require careful priming with their black primer/sealer. You then have to sand the primer to achieve a uniform surface. The results are often very good, but still to a certain extent look like plastic with metallic paint on it.

Bill, I did notice that AK did indeed recommend priming with black.

I have the AK app on my iPad, and it has a video on how to use the TrueMetal. Looks like it is orders of magnitude easier to use than ALCLAD.

AK's web site said they are enamel based paints.
