These are in progress pics of Tamiya's old Tamiya Hanomag kit, (1973 was imprinted in the interior chassis section :-) .
My brother, a history teacher in Texas, provided this kit with a request for a build/paint job to use along with his many other modeling subjects for class discussion.
The kit is straight oob and detail is austere, especially in the interior. Things still to do, -- add white glue to the scooped out headlamps for lenses, dry brush and work on the undercarriage weathering, paint two figs (one leaping from the vehicle, and one manning the front mg), hang/add some gear in the crew compartment to break up the monotony, and a mini base.
As always, all helpful comments are appreciated. Thanks.
Steve

Lord WWH,
Very nicely done weathering and all, It showed again, you are truely a master of mono color vehicles.
This is a very not detailed kit, which obmits a lot of interior detailing, but as is, it's a great outcome.
One thing, the MG looked a bit odd to me, maybe the saddle drums should be attached beneath the gun? I could be wrong. I am sure Lord Nelson or Lord Witch or Lord Carl can explain better than me.
Good work

Lord Steve -
Superb job on the finish...... once again..... WOW! :-) From talking with you in the chat- I was under the impression that you were having problems with it.... I see that isn't the case :-) hehehe Panel shading is top rate, along with the color variations.... I'll ask once again for your secret....?
The only thing I can see that you might consider, is to rust up the muffler a bit more. Maybe make it a bit darker. Other than that, I can't see anything more I would do to this little gem.
Take care-
Nelson

Amigo-- great job. Can you describe your basic paint color and the weathering. The MG-42 just does not look right. Maybe ammo cans or more blue/black would enhance.

hahaha - see Steve........... another question about your "secret" technique lol..... please do share it with us in an article :-)
I know you said you are gonna do it on your next OD project..... but I'm not very patient.. lol
Just a quick run-down here would tide me over :-)
You know I'm gonna keep bugging you 'till you let me in on the Lord WeWillHold secret...
Later-

I'm kind of embarassed about the goof up on the machine gun ammo magazines. According to the kit directions the ammo magazines are "pointed" to the top of the machine gun, but --- a small photo of the model seems to show the mags attached from below the machine gun (but it is tough to tell for sure because the picture is so small). I would agree with a couple of comments here that the mg does not look appropriate----so-----> the mag's attach from the bottom of the mg??? :-)
Lord's Nelson, 210Cav, and Machu
(1) Prepaint the vehicle in a base coat of Model Master Acrylic mud.
(2) Next, airbrush a light covering of Model Master Dunkelgelb (acrylic) over the entire vehicle -- try to stay away from the edges, and nooks and crannies, so the darker base coat is not covered up.
(3) Lightly airbrush on all edges and corners, Model Master Field Drab (acrylic)-stay away from the center of the panels with this color.
(4) Now lightly spray the entire model with clear unthinned acryl thinner (this step seems to soften and blend everything together), --and allow the model to completely dry.
(5) Take some dunkelgelb and mix it 50-50 with flat white and very lightly airbrush the centers of any larger flat areas.
(6) Airbrush a highly thinned black wash along the edges only, (be careful of runs).
Allow this to dry and if the model looks ok ---then great! Otherwise it's just more repetitions of the above to get the model where you want it. Then weather/dry brush as you see fit.
Sorry-kind of wordy---but give it go, and thanks for the kind words and suggestions.

Nice build - I am doing this kit for RMG and doing a lot of interior scratch building and detailing to try to help it along.
As far as the MG goes. The instructions do have it going on top. It does not fit well at all. I looked at Squadron pubs sdKfz 251 and on page 10 the rea MG has the drum going in on top - however the top of the sadle pack is even with the top of the MG. On page 20 there is a belt feed that goes in at the top. So if you use the same method only in a drum form it should load at the top of the MG. Bingo page 28 and 29 and 30 there is one where it is on top. There is a cloth/canvas carring strap across the top of the drum and it sticks up quite a bit, so you may try mimicing that or seat the drum down a bit more.
Thanks for the painting techniques!!
Wonderful job on a dog of a kit. If you want a better Tamiya 251get the Stuka Zu Fuss, it's nicer!!!

Hi Steve ...nice quicky job you got going there ..it is nice to build a kit just out of the box just for the heck of it (or for your brother..lol) Excellent job on the faded look ...I know this is out of the box and all but those Tamiya decals for the Afrikakorp are bogus they tried to represent a grey vehicle that was repainted and the palm tree insignia was just masked off ...why they did the background color green I will never know ....So if that is the case then the interior should be grey as they seldom repainted the interiors but it could happen ...as for the double drum on the MG I think it is just badly done and you might just replace it with either a single one or just a belt of ammo hanging down ...that would look cool ...lol
you do know this is all just nit-picking and I think it is just fine for what it will be used for ...just thought you would like to know..Great job!
Rick

SteveWWH,
Nice to see your kit again on the post. The Hanomag looks awesome and you have achieved an master grade of weathering on it as well. I read your intruction about weathering and I am gonna follow suit because I am working on a Dragon Sdkfz Ausf 251/C now. Hope that I can do as best as what you have done. Keep us post and good work again!
