From a modeling standpoint, it looks no different externally than an M1A2 SEP v2. Pretty much all the upgrades are internal. The only external difference is at the left rear there is a small exhaust for the new under armour generator. It is pretty much the same Under Armor APU (UUAPU) setup the original M1A2 had.

There is talk on another site about a low profile CROWS, but no pics. Can you shed any light on that Gino?

The RWS looks like a standard CROWS 2 to me.

So this is just an upgrade for existing tanks and not the M1A3 that they are supposed to be working on, right?

The M1A3 isn't supposed to be shown off till 2020 or so. Doesn't sound like it will be all that different visually either...just a new lighter weight main gun and some other things to make it lose some weight. I haven't seen anything official lately on it though.

I wonder how the V3 will look like or when they will release images of it.

With each upgrade, there has to be enough new features to warrant funding and taking the tanks out of service for months to get upgraded.

I suppose the SEP V3 does have enough new features. I suppose the Army is really interested in the new frontal armor package and that alone can't really be done outside of the manufacturer's buildings.

Without the lenses below the weapon it should be at least a few inches shorter. It does still look awful tall though. I wonder if the weapon will sit any lower than on the manual mount?

Regards,

Eric

I don't think the Armata is that big of an improvement, other than survivability. It uses the same 125mm gun as the T72/T90. The T72/T90 was an easy target for the Abrams, no contest. I have seen what an Abrams can do to a T72/T90. I think the Armata was built to match the capabilities of the Abrams, not really be a vast improvement/advancement over it.

Why? Time has nothing to do with it. If it is still capable of taking on and destroying any tank in the world, why replace it? The limited funds can be used for something else.

Because Armata ? Russia demonstrate it´s power with new tank and NATO (USA) still only upgrades... It is a demonstrate of technologic superiority over Russia... Look Mr. Putin, you have Armata, we have better and most advanced tank. Simple... I hope in new Leopard(TIger) III or super tank from US arsenal. Maybe have new Abrams under its armor many hi-tech technology, but looks very similar as old versions. I except remote controled turret, bigger gun etc. etc...

(I know, words of military-fan.)

I'm still not impressed by the Armata. It looks like Russia is trying to make an Abrams-type tank. I don't see any improvement in it. Big deal, a remote turret, more stuff to break. Still no need to build a new tank to replace the Abrams.

Dan hit the nail on the head. It is actually all about the crews. A well-trained crew will win every time.
